Katie Holmes in Saint Laurent in NYC

Posted on April 17, 2014

We’re here to tell you that even we have moments of celebrity style naivete.

At some point in our blogging careers, we realized that there was a significant segment of the public who didn’t quite get just how phony and planned certain aspects of celebrity life actually are; especially the world of paparazzi street shots. Celebrity-stalking is a real issue and we’d say that when they bitch about their privacy being invaded by the paps, they have a bona fide complaint roughly 50% of the time. But the other 50%, we’re gonna call foul when we see it. There’s way too much obvious coordinating and product placement going on in half the pap pics we see out there. We made it our mission to point these things out as much as possible, hence the focus on jokes like “Yes, we can see the label of the bag, dear” and pretty much the all-time favorite of street-style attention-whoring: The Reese Witherspoon Parking Lot Promenade Tour of 2013/14.

Anyway, our point? We weren’t even sure if we wanted to feature these pics because we assumed that was just some off-the-rack or thrift store sweater she was wearing and weren’t sure if people would be interested. Pft. As if, to quote the Lesser Cher.

Of course it’s a Saint Laurent. We’re embarrassed we ever (briefly – VERY BRIEFLY, Lorenzo would like you to know) assumed it was anything else.

She looks really cute. Favorite casual street look we’ve seen all week.

    Happy, relaxed, cute, weather-appropriate.

  • Carleenml

it looks like an off-the-rack thrift store sweater.

    • Anna

My thoughts exactly. A pretty cute off-the-rack thrift store sweater as I do like it, but would never know or guess it was Saint Laurent unless it was pointed out to me.

      • BayTampaBay

I do not even see it as cute. I am starting to worry about the Saint Laurent label/brand.

        • Anna

That’s fair. And it is worrisome. If the caption read “Urban Outfitters,” that would make much more sense.

        • Isabel

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m with you. That Saint Laurent is responsible for this surprises me. Is Yves rolling in his catacomb?

      • lchopalong

When I saw it I thought it was Wildfox Couture at first, which confused me. She’s doesn’t fit the typical for that.

    • Judy_S

I think the question then becomes, is it IRONIC? And if so, does Ms. Holmes get the joke?

    • Janice Bartels

I was kind of thinking it looked like Gymboree. Maybe Suri is letting Mom raid her closet?

  • crash1212

As the Queen of Cardigans – Northern California Branch, I must have that sweater – STAT. So cute.

    • kimmeister

How many do you have??? I might have to dispute you for the title. I don’t know my exact count, but I’m guessing it’s more than 30.

      • crash1212

Must confess, I’ve never counted, but I would suspect we can share the title! 🙂 The good news – Target is having a sale and I spied some really cute ones in their ad, so I’m off shopping on Saturday to add to the collection.

        • kimmeister

Well if the prize for being the Queen is this star cardigan, it’s all yours.

  • PlethoraofBooks

She’s finally shaken off the slouchy I’m Trying To Find My Feet After Cruise stage!

  • jw_ny

    Katie’s go-to affirmation sweater…I am a star, I am a star…

    • Anna

Starlight, starbright, first star I see tonight…

  • Danielle

A thousand dollars for a cardigan I could have pulled off the rack at Old Navy. Incredible.

    • Erica

Mm. It’s not worth 1k to me, as that wouldn’t even cover my day care bill for a month, but every sweater I’ve ever bought at Old Navy pills and stretches. Let’s hope the money spent on this one avoids THAT problem.

She looks adorbs, to put it obnoxiously.

      • BlairBear

you mean the shipping money? I’m sure the sweater was a loaner/gift

        • Erica

Oh, yeah. I meant the money mere mortals would spend. Miss Katie doesn’t pay for her schlupping around sweaters.

      • Carleenml

it already looks pilly stretchy to me.

      • demidaemon

I’ve been having that problem with my own recently purchased Old Navy sweaters–the pilling in particular. I think I’m going to have to buy a depiller.

        • lchopalong

          A cheap razor works miracles!

          • demidaemon

    • MarissaLG

Old Navy would never put such a heinous pattern on a cardi.

      • Sarah

Old Navy would not put a pattern on ANY cardi. So. Plain. their clothes are.

        • demidaemon

They do have argyle sweaters now. That’s a pattern, right?

          • Sarah

Yes, but still. I was in there while was waiting for new tires to be put on my car last week, and it was a snoozefest of epic proportions.

          • demidaemon

Yeah, the last time I was in there (about a month ago) I think I looked at an eighth of the store–basically what was on sale. I totally understand what you are saying.

          • Sarah

Whenever I have gone there with a friend, we always beeline for the few items that DO have some flavor, and then talk each other out of them with the reasoning that Everyone Will Know it is from Old Navy. Hence I quit going there unless I need chinos or something.

          • kimmeister

Their style has gotten even more casual over the years, not to mention very junior. They also make clothes for women who are straight up and down, rather than hourglass. I pretty much can only buy scarves and workout clothes.

        • MemHey

Buy the ON cardi, then use that freezer paper stenciling tutorial you pinned to your “DIY Chic” board.

          • Sarah

Ha. I just buy stuff that is already interesting. Or, you know, stuff from Target.

          • kimmeister

I think 99% of my print cardis are from Target.

  • ScarlettHarlot

I love the whole look! I could see Olivia Wilde in this. (She and Eva Mendes are two of my favorite street style stars.)

  • BendinIntheWind

    • Erica

I know, right? I quote Cher Horowitz much more than CHER.

  • MasterandServant

Really cute- and since it got so cold (and snowy!) here again this week, she probably didn’t want to pull out her winter coat. I totally did yesterday morning, along with gloves. Wasn’t it 75 degrees out this weekend?

    • deelup

I put on my winter coat and refused to zip it in defiance. But it was so cold I held it together with my hands. If I weren’t so stubborn I would’ve zipped the damn thing.

      • MasterandServant

I actually like glove weather, because it means I do not have to touch the subway with my hands!

  • tallgirl1204

The thing is, this look is totally imitate-able by us mortals, exactly from said thrift store– and it’s wearable as well. I know she gets her stuff for free, so isn’t that a form of celebrity “thrifting”?

  • Very cute. She’s figured out how the proportions thing works for jeans after a few mis-hits.

  • deelup

If I wore this sweater people would assume I’d hand stamped the fabric with sponge stamps and nodded and smiled at me with pity. But on Katie Holmes it’s YSL.

  • It’s cute, in a “I just escaped the cult and now I’m in the city with the sun on my face without Guru Micah-Moon telling me when I can!” way.

  • Kate Andrews

    The blue version is super-cute!

  • jilly_d

This is really cute and I would totally buy that sweater if it were on the thrift store rack. but not for what SL is probably charging for it.

  • sagecreek

Still love that smile. Freedom becomes you, Katie.

  • sugarkane105

Her jeans appear to be painted on.

    • Spicytomato1

I was thinking the same thing, and wondering how long it takes to pull those things on. She went from one baggy extreme to the other.

  • Vee

Forget the sweater, I want those jeans (jeggings?)

  • jerseyginger

That’s basically my uniform (switch out Old Navy for the Saint Laurent, lol) so I approve.

  • GorgeousThings

Sorry, that is one hideous sweater, especially for $713 on sale.

  • ashtangajunkie

I like the sweater. She’s looking great, especially the shiny hair.

  • lunchcoma

I am basically wearing that cardigan, with polka dots instead of stars. It’s a nice cardigan. Her version looks damn good on her. But I wonder what it’s made of if it costs $1000.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Stardust and moonbeams.

  • Flavia Pantoja

What I don’t get, is why does Katie Holmes- who probably does not need to receive free sweaters or more attention- need this kind of photo op? Why does she even accept the free gifts (assuming it is free..)? Really. I mean, I don’t ever see Meryl Streep with the latest (free) Balenciaga bag sashaying down the streets of NYC. Please enlighten me.

    • MilaXX

To keep the publicity flames burning. Wearing free stuff get tongues wagging and their names in our hearts & minds.

    • Kathy

It may be wise for her to stay in the public eye. That makes it harder for the Scientology people to give her grief. There’s always a photographer around to catch them at it.

    • Carleenml

because (unlike Meryl) where would she be if she wasn’t in the public eye? *crickets*

    • She doesn’t get as much work as Meryl!

    • marlie

The celebrities are always the people who don’t NEED free clothes. But a designer sens them the goods, the publicists tip off the paparazzi to where the celeb will be, and *BAM* instant free publicity for the designer AND people are talking about Katie.

  • j_am

The thing is, it COULD be a thrift store sweater. Why anyone would shell out major cash for that astounds me.

  • MilaXX

Her true gal about town shots are never as put together. This is cute.

  • Anathema_Device

The first thing I noticed is that she’s not smirking! She’s actually smiling! A real one. That’s the biggest thing to me here. Yeah, the sweater looks totally thrift store, which is silly for an exorbitantly priced piece, but she looks cute and happy.

  • LadyVimes

She looks so much more relaxed and happy post-CruiseCult. That pre nup must have been AWESOME.

  • Little_Olive

That cardigan is cute, but in white -that bathroom-tile baby blue is terrible- and in any case not so much that YSL could produce it.

Cute outfit, I guess. She needs a new pair of black boots.

  • suzq

We still can’t see the label of the bag. AND WE WANT TO!!!!

  • formerlyAnon

That sweater is how you do ’80s retro flavor.

  • tereliz

Pretty sure she’s at least worn this thousand dollar sweater at least once before. So there’s that.

  • marlie

It seems like Katie rarely does the “staged” walkabouts. Here, she looks like any other 20 or 30- something running errands on a spring day. She happens to be wearing a St. Laurent sweater, but otherwise, she looks pretty normal.

    • Lisa_Co

I think that’s true. About a year ago I stood in a crowded rush hour subway car next to her and Jeanne Yang.. It took me a few minutes to recognize her, she looked so “normal”.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

It looks like this sweater is lined which would take it out of the thrift store realm (unless it was some high-end charity thrift store). Her hair is beautiful, healthy and shiny…nice.

  • Imasewsure

God I want all of this…. totally in my frumpy (yet tight-jeaned) aesthetic!

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

a sweater with lining…that is heaven.

    • kimmeister

It would probably be as itchy as all get-out without it!

      • Jean Beaton Leavitt

True but mere mortals have to wear a long sleeved high necked shirt with itchy sweaters.

  • decormaven

Out and about in a totally cute outfit. What’s not to love?

  • KinoEye

Love that sweater, but not the crazy price tag. Fresh and fun.

  • Twigg

    That is a bathrobe cardigan.

  • Over $700 (on sale!) and it’s mohair which you know means it itches like crazy. No thanks. I’ll wait for the REAL off the rack thrift store copy, thanks.

  • bunnydiet

He must have had some fabric left from the Olympics!

  • Granny panties

I usually like Katie’s cool style and admire her lovely hair cuts over the years. I really hate those blue spandex pants she is wearing. So unflattering.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

And the sweater is on sale for only $700.00. What a bargain.

    • crash1212

I must confess, I misread your post and thought you said it was on sale for $70.00 – hahahahahahahahaha! – and so I couldn’t click fast enough to make that purchase….in my mind. $700 – for a sweater. Way too rich for my bank account!

  • kimmeister

I’m on record for my dislike of star prints; this one does not change my opinion. However, I am crazy envious of her ability to look like that in super skinny jeans.

  • Laylalola

But that sweater or some variation of it has been on all the celebrities for the past year it seems. In particular there’s a red slouchy sweatshirt/sweater with stars on it worn the past few months by (a quick Google shows): Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Jessica Simpson, and Miley Cyrus. It’s definitely not Yves Saint Laurent but by some off-the-rack place called S22.

  • Jessica Freeman

I love the look but there are probably 100 pins on Pinterest to make this with a stencil and thrift store sweater.

  • Raspberry2012

It looks extremely comfy, and very cute!

  • She looks really cute and pulled together in a wholly comfortable, “real world” way. It’s sort of the uniform I default to as a work-at-home writer. Although, if I had been forced to guess, I would have said she picked that sweater up at Target or some such.

  • Vtg Fashion Library

From Saint Laurent’s Curt Cobain collection.

  • Fuchsiaforever

St. Laurent from up close. St. Marks thrift shop from afar. (kinda like the opposite of a “Monet”)

  • Sophie

The proportions are very nice, but I really dislike the pale blue. And the stars.

  • siriuslover

And the fact that she’s smiling ear-to-ear in happy freedom helps the look, too.

  • altalinda

Love the relaxed smile she’s wearing.

  • icm

This goes to show one if not 2 things. The so called thrift (mall stores ) are doing a much better job of producing product that is accessible to everyone.Second thing,The fact that this sweater is Saint Laurent (hmmmm $1000 maybe?)is laughable. Unless you have xray vision to see the label You could get the same look for 20 bucks at any mall . I guess my point is why throw away tons of money when truthfully know one would know where this sweater came from.

  • FridaStaire

THAT is YSL? The world has gone mad.

  • Clash D

For a second there I thought she was Britney Spears.

  • Bob Loblaw

That is a toddler sweater. Sure, a well dressed toddler, but toddler nonetheless.
