Emma Watson in Ralph Lauren at the “Noah” London Premiere

Posted on April 01, 2014

She did it again. She really does have magic powers.

Because we’re pretty sure this look on anyone else would have us grinding our teeth in boredom. Which isn’t to say she makes it look exciting, but she has a talent for making very simple and basic styles look astoundingly chic when she puts them on. Which worries us, because we wouldn’t want her to think she can only wear this kind of stuff. She’s good with the tricky and the edgy too. We’d hate to see her take an Allison Williams route, where she winds up dressing too old and pissing cranky T Lo off.

In other words, we’ll give you this one, Emma. But we want to see something more interesting next time, with perhaps a little more effort on the hair front. Also: this pulls too much and we really don’t love the flounce.

But you look gorgeous, it’s true. Magic.

    • Anna

She looks beautiful, but did she get married at the Noah premiere?

    • @Biting Panda

Saw this last night and said “WERQ! IT!!” out loud. The dogs were startled and confused, the cat didn’t give a shit, but I loved it.

      • ballerinawithagun

Love it too including the flounce!

    • Danielle

I’m dying for this water carpet. She looks like a siren rising up out of the waves.

      • Nancer

I didn’t notice the carpet at first, I had to go back and look. It really is dramatic, isn’t it?

        • Meri

I really want that carpet for my hallway. Or bedroom.

          • Kent Roby

I’ve had that carpet in my bedroom. And by “carpet” I mean “actual water”.

      • Kitten Mittons

It’s the first “weird” red carpet/backdrop I’ve really liked. That’s really cool.

She looks so lovely. Safe, simple, but undeniably beautiful. I just want to pinch her cheeks, she’s growing up so fast!

        • Danielle

Sometimes I catch Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone on ABC Family and get a little weepy over how young the Golden Trio looked. It was so fun to grow up with them.

          • Kitten Mittons

And watch them turn out relatively normal, to boot. Refreshing.

      • Wendi126

I thought she could also walk on water

      • Kent Roby

SO freakin’ cool! She looks amazing, the “water” is crazy fun, and the “NO” on the rock in the 2nd and 3rd photo is probably pretty prophetic about going to this movie!

      • VioletF.

Yep. Add to her Magic Powers: walking on Water and enchanting near-by Muggles to do the same.

Can’t help but contrast Emma’s expression with sad Jennifer Connelly’s.

    • ScarlettHarlot

See Shailene, it’s not impossible to be simple yet chic! Gah, maybe Emma needs to become Shailene’s mentor.

      • Daisy Walker

        I second this recommendation.

    • MarieLD

She is the best witch of her generation. (A paraphrase from The Prisoner of Azkaban.)

    • Ginger

The shoes and the pulling in the bodice are my only quibbles, and they’re both minor. She is stunning.

    • Nancer

SOOOO happy with the earrings and bracelet! I think she looks lovely.

      • KES4K

Pretty sure she’s worn those earrings before! I like it when stars re-wear pieces, it seems like a glimpse into what they must really like/choose for themselves rather than a stylist-generated package.

        • Nancer

Now that you mention it, I think I have seen these on her before. I agree, it’s nice to see them wear things more than once. I assume from this that she prefers delicate pieces, which seem very appropriate for her.

    • kmk05

GORGE. I am actually in love with the hair.

ETA: Not totally sold on the two bracelets, but their sleekness is acceptable.

      • CakesOnAPlane

I’m curious to know what is in her hair back there? I wish we had a shot of the back

        • kmk05

I’m very much hoping they’re fancy pins like the ones used in bridal hairdos (fancy fake diamond ones) because the alternative is just to horrible to even imagine (i.e. if they were these barrettes/regular pins she seems to favour).

    • Darren Nesbitt

I don’t think she’s lost the edge. Remember the Dior dress in the front and pants in the back? I heart her in all the things.

    • Golfkat

LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT “RED” CARPET THOUGH. I’m very excited.

      • colleenjanel

I know, right?!?! Someone deserves a big fat raise over that idea! Brilliant!

        • decormaven

After that craptastic step and repeat from the Jameson Whiskey event, it’s a treat to see graphic design properly deployed.

    • HVM

I would change the shoes but otherwise she looks amazing.

    • Julie

Necklines: best of the nineties edition!

      • imspinningaround

THANK YOU. This whole look is head to toe Prom 1998!

        • Julie

          She looks gorgeous nonetheless.

    • ashtangajunkie

This is gorgeous. I don’t love the shoes, but this is a big win.

    • lrober03

She looks ethereal and other worldly but not bridal, which could be hard in a white dress.
(i think the ladies could use a little more structure/support though)

    • Miss Ruth

My only quibble is that maybe she needs a skosh more lip. But everything else is stunning. I generally don’t like that type of neckline at all, but she’s making it work beautifully. And even in the most awkward of the step-and-repeat poses, her posture/carriage is lovely.

    • Marie Sea

Oh for heavens sake – you want to see her in something interesting? Check out the gown she wore to the Four Seasons Q&A. It was really, really different and no one has blogged it. No wonder she does these safe looks. It’s the only thing that gets noticed.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

      its the bracelet!

    • schadenfreudelicious

I have said it before and I shall say it again…she and Kiernan Shipka need to be cast as sisters toute suite..

    • xmixiex

      my god. WERQ. GIRL.

    • crash1212

      She’s literally walking on water.

    • NinjaCate

I love in the second shot her face is like “I’m not having this” and in the background it says “NO” from what I presume is the Noah sign.

    • Jacob Bowen

This carpet makes this dress even more ethereal. PERFECT. I really have to google the back of her head now to see her hair!

    • SugarSnap108

It’s true. She walk-eth on water.

    • http://batman-news.com boweryboy

These photos do not show that the dress has an OMG split up the thigh which she is WERQing! My only quibble is she should remove one bracelet and/or replace it with a bolder piece.

Also, I love how the red carpet is water.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

She has very strong, dramatic shoulders (which I hadn’t noticed before), and this dress really shows them off. It’s a lovely dress on a lovely woman.

    • alyce1213

It’s all about her poise. For a simple white dress, it’s really nice — I love the shape and the flare of fabric at the slit.

    • fringebenefit

      Absolutely exquisite.

    • housefulofboys

Gorgeous. Breathtaking. And the hint of sea-foam in the shoes is perfection, especially on that flooring (which, incidentally, made me look twice to see if it was flooding…?). On another note, I WANT those earrings, anyone know where to get a non-diamond knock-off?

    • uprightcitizen

Great choice for this photo carpet. Ethereal. If she had worn something edgy or complicated, it wouldn’t have looked right, walking all Jesus-like on the water. Great instincts.

    • MilaXX

I’m wondering if she’s keeping it classy because it’s a (loosely based) biblical movie. I like the look but I’m not sure tricky or edgey designs would be appropriate for this pole dance.

      • FrigidDiva

Having seen the movie, I think she could go with tricky. SPOILERISH ALERT, they take a lot of liberties from the source material. Also, aside from some very attractive actors I really wish I hadn’t wasted the money to see this. Probably the worst movie I’ve ever seen in the theater.

        • snarkykitten

You mean vikings WEREN’T trying to steal Noah’s boat???
(that’s all I got from the trailers)

          • FrigidDiva

Add “post-industrial” to the above description of Vikings and you pretty much have the plot of the movie.

            • Lucinda Head

This movie is predictably whitewashed, offensive trash. White Europeans as the parents of humanity, natch.

    • KinoEye

She really loves those earrings, and I do too. Miss Emma is becoming a chameleon — she can work the simple looks and tricky looks equally well. I think a lot of it has to do with natural poise and presence. I really like the carpet.

    • NMMagpie

Those cuffs are giving me LIFE.

    • HyacinthWild

She’s very pretty but the overall look is way too Prom ’99 for me.

    • formerlyAnon

Smart to go to this well while young and shapely with beautiful skin. I’d have liked a more prominent cuff on one wrist.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

She’s gorgeous and she can walk on water.

    • lalahartma

      Yeah!

    • http://sleepingfoxstitchery.weebly.com CLoverleaf

For some reason the first line of this made me think this was going to be another surprise pants outfit.

    • Evan

She’s like a real life Botticelli.

    • msdamselfly

SHe’s got the perfect shoulders for a halter

    • LaSylphide

The flounce is the only thing that gives the dress any interest (aside from Emma, of course). She looks good in white, too.
      Very soignée.

    • B_C_J

Gorgeous. Her sense of fashion is developed well beyond her years. Also, she carries herself like a ballerina. I love her style.

    • Sophie

I don’t know, shouldn’t the halter be just a bit thicker? It doesn’t look very comfortable or capable of supporting the weight of the fabric. Is she wearing the same cuff in silver on one arm and gold on the other? Her hair and make-up are great, she looks very elegant.

    • Pablo

She can keep doing whatever it is she’s doing because it’s totally working

    • kategs

She looks wonderful but what I love is what I guess technically the step and repeat? It’s really effective, I think.

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

MAN, she’s a tiny thing, isn’t she? The dress seems to fit her well, but also somehow emphasizes that. But yeah, everything you guys said. And she’s wearing my favorite earring style.

    • Imasewsure

Nothing about this is boring to me. Love it

    • Clash D

Halter neck seems to be her new default style for red carpet appearances. No complaints though. She looks great in it.

    • paintedfish

i think it helps having that cool red carpet. she looks very greek goddess.

    • FrigidDiva

It’s so sophisitcated, love it. I just wish she’d have gone with one cuff instead of two. Also, she’s the best thing about this dreck of a movie, actually she’s the ONLY good thing about this movie–except for when it was over and I could let loose my hysterical laughter. Ooof, what a dud of a film. Hopefully her next project is better.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I told Mr. B3 yesterday that I will see Noah if I can catch it on a bargain show. For one thing, Russell Crowe as Noah scares me-and what is with those people in the still photo wearing raincoats in Old testament times?

        • KinoEye

Russell Crowe as Noah had me rolling on the floor when it was announced. Do you realize how much of that man’s career has been spent on boats? Master and Commander, his band (30 Odd Feet of Grunt) has one or more boat-themed videos, and wasn’t he on a ship in Les Miserables? And now, this, the ultimate boat movie.

AND, the man is making his own movie about a battle in the first World War that took place on — you guessed it — an ocean. It’s even called The Water Diviner.

          • FrigidDiva

I don’t know which one had me more entertained when they announced the casting, Russell Crowe as Noah or Christian Bale as Moses. Those two are so ultra method when it comes to their acting, can you even imagine how insufferable they were to be around while making their movies? I’m just wondering what Crowe did to really get into character? Rain dances?

            • KinoEye

Hahahaha… Oh man, I think that would make a much better movie than Noah. Just Bale and Crowe roving round the set, terrorizing people in character.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

OMG-that would be great-the current alpha males of method acting on the same set, terrifying all around

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Noah the ultimate boat movie-I love it! whenever I see Crowe in a movie I always, in my mind, add one of my favorite lines from Gladiator-“Are you not entertained?” Try it.

        • FrigidDiva

I’d wait until you can catch it on cable at a friend’s house so you’re not even remotely having to pay to see it.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I’ll keep that in mind. I figure it’s at least one week away from bargain status.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

White shoes! Ugh. I’d love a delicate silver pump, but I guess that’s just me.

    • Cheryl

I dunno, I think she looks great, flounce and all. And what a beautiful back drop!

    • judybrowni

Pretty girl, in the perfect dress for her

Never seen the movie, probably never will, but I have a vague memory of the Biblical story: correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Noah commit incest with his daughters?

If Emma plays one of his daughters, I pray to the screen gods the movie ended before that plot point.

      • Gatto Nero

I believe in the screen version (with which many liberties were taken, needlesss to say), she plays Noah’s “adopted” daughter.

      • KinoEye

Yep… the funny thing is, when you wipe out an entire population, that kinda limits your mating potential. I’ve always wondered how they managed to repopulate successfully with incest. But yeah, it sometimes blows my mind that this is one of the first stories the little ones learn in Sunday school. And it’s one of the more violent/disturbing ones by far.

      • FrigidDiva

She does play an adopted daughter, and I think incest was the only thing they left off from the craziness of the plot of the movie.

      • KateS

No, that was Lot. His daughters convinced him that they were the only ones left alive after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah( and mommy getting turned into a pillar of salt). The world must be peopled!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Noah gets drunk and his son sees him naked. For shame!

    • Qitkat

She has beautiful shoulders and great posture. That, and confidence, goes a long long way to making the simplest dress look more elegant.

That is an awesome change-up for the standard carpet. I’d like to see this more often, but it would probably become gimmicky.

    • DinahR

Gorgeous! and y’know… if her stylist new the ‘backdrop’ she’d be photographed on top of? This dress is kinda dreamy with that pictorial idea of ‘walking on water’ for her Noah film… which I guess should have been saved for a Moses film but.. whatever! She looks like a lil goddess! Just perfect.

      • Gloriana Reginata

Noah got there before Moses, chronology-wise.

    • Gatto Nero

Emma will never descend into Allison Williams’ territory because 1) she has great taste and 2) she wears everything with a confidence and grace that AW lacks.
Allison always looks as though she’s beseeching: “How’s this? Am I pretty? Is this edgy enough?!?”

    • FancyPhilly

I think the cool “flood” carpet has a lot to do with making this look interesting.

      • random_poster

I do too, but in a way that the two were coordinated for that very purpose. It’s rather masterful, and I wish more premieres could do that effectively.

    • Lily

I feel like they planned this dress to match the sea foam on the flooring below. She looks great here, although I do wish they’d chosen an edgier shoe, perhaps a soft metallic to offset the white and give more dimension.

    • mjmiller77

      gorgeous. simply gorgeous.

    • BayTampaBay

Sorry guys but I like it all.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

This, minus the neckline, is very 40s Vogue. I think I have – or have had – a pattern that is this exact dress, with a different neckline. The pulling seen at the waistline is actually gathers at the left. It’s gorgeous, even with the updated neckline. RL has never been exactly original in his look, but he fluffed this one just enough to make it fresh. Love it.

    • melanie0866

      I want to be her.

    • ascholarsparrot

Love the earrings….subtle but not boring.

    • marlie

So pretty! She looks chic and elegant. The little bit of ‘tude works as well.

    • Sunraya

      Very elegant! And chic!

    • alliekat9090

Gorgeous. But I kind of wish it was anything but white.

    • SusannaGA

      She has magic shoulders.

    • Comfy

      This carpet is so fun.

    • Cassidy Olsen

Usually those necklines make me think “swimsuit” but this is too elegant to fall into that category. Her shoulders look amazing!

    • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

That water-flooded carpet is awesome! Maybe the only good thing that can come out of making a movie about Noah’s ark.

      • altissima

She’s like a Venus rising from the waves.

    • SweetJess MeanGreen

I LOVE THIS LOOK!! Go Emma. She’s doing the coming-of-age-in-Hollywood bit very graciously.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Her shoulders with that neckline = exquisite. I love the cuff, the perfect punctuation for a clean and elegant look.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

This is a very Charlene of Monaco dress, but I love it on Emma. I would love it more with a slightly pinker and bolder lip, and something fierce in footwear.

    • amaranth16

Is it just me, or does her right boob look a LOT lower than her left one in all of these pictures? I’m not sure how a dress with such a simple, symmetrical bust could cause such a titscrepancy, but there you go. Anyway, she looks gorgeous.
