Emma Thompson at the “Sweeney Todd” Opening Night Gala

Posted on March 06, 2014

We’ll never get tired of Emma’s “dotty English aunt” schtick on the red carpet, but a line has to be drawn somewhere and we think we’ve just discovered our limit when it comes to forgiving her style missteps.

If it’s likely to cause seizures if you stare at it too long, then we’re not on board, Ems. Sorry.

Great coat, but you’d have to be blind or a sadist to want to pair it with … whatever it is she’s wearing underneath it. Given the glee written all over her face, we’re wondering if she’s actively trying to give all those photographers migraines.

    • Mimi

      Oh… jesus… #MESS

    • Tanya Wade

You have to wonder what she would have worn to the Oscars had she been nominated. It would have made for a more interesting evening, that’s for sure.
This coat looks like one or two of the 101 dalmations made peeps on it.So maybe it doubles as a wee pad?

      • Imasewsure

I don’t think we would have seen the dotty English aunt at the Oscars… I’m guessing we would have seen her in an elegant Oscar at the Oscars… probably pale and glittery like half of the other ladystars in attendance

    • Kim Elmore

She HAS to be loaded in these, amiright?!

      • Akemi

        She looks completely smashed.

      • Gatto Nero

Maybe. But she’s got that endearingly wacky thing going anyway.

      • Lucía Gavello

Oh for sure, and I love her drunk ass.

      • par3182

Hasn’t she just come off stage? Probably a post performance high. She’s not just attending “Sweeney Todd”; she’s playing Mrs Lovett (hence the hair and face scrubbed of stage make up).

        • rainwood1

And I heard she was fabulous as Mrs. Lovett so good on her. A woman of many talents even if fashion plate isn’t one of them.

          • AES

She was exceptional – better than I expected. And given her hair during the show, I’m amazed it looks this good.

      • gabbilevy

All I know is opening night of a play is peak exhaustion for me, because you’ve come off the worst/hardest/most stressful period of rehearsals, plus EMOTIONS for finally getting through it in front of an audience. Live theatre = Better than drugs.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I like the coat..and I’m going to give her big props for the boots because I recall some pretty dowdy footwear choices in the past. But yeah…that’s a lot going on with the top underneath and a whole Hell of a lot going on for not doing any hair or makeup. Odd…

      • Kent Roby

She was a solid-colored top away from having a really good look here.

    • Jackie4g

What was it last night? Minus 9 with the windchills? I give people props for even leaving their houses with this brutal cold. Whatever work you might do, you do it from home, if possible. Seriously, it’s a little strange, but it’s wool and it’s covered, which makes sense of late.

    • Sarah

I would forgive her the outfit if it wasn’t for the shiny face and the I’ve been driving in a convertible hair. Love the boots, though! And she can still be my auntie anytime.

      • Glam Dixie

        Get out of my brain!

      • SierraDelta

I’ve got a convertible. I’ll drive, Emma’s shotgun, you’re in the back behind Emma. Who’s our fourth?

    • Glam Dixie

Shiny face, frizzy hair and seizure inducing coat? Check. Let’s go.

    • KinoEye

My eyes will explode if I stare at that pile of houndstooth (normally one of my favorites) for much longer. But she does look as if she’s gleefully trolling the paps, which is an awesome thought.

      • Ginger

It’s as though she’s giving them the proverbial middle finger, no?

    • hughman

Since she just wrote “Annie”, I’m guessing this is what she thinks orphans wear.

    • Anna

Well, this answers my “how much houndstooth is too much” question. The last picture cracks me up though, “Yeah, I did a few shots in the limo. And your point is???”

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She is the puppet master. I’ve been her bitch since “Dead Again”.

      • 3boysful

ADORE that movie. And I will always love her, but she needs some lowlights (that blond is washing out her skin), some conditioner, some makeup, and a black (or red or turquoise or hot pink or . . .) cashmere turtleneck dress under that cape-thingie.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Bitter Kittens for a Better Emma Thompson. Sometimes, the British need to be told that they can have good things…

          • 3boysful

And, full disclosure, I realized I made all those judgments sitting here in my dried-sweat workout clothes. From the 8:30am class.

      • Lower L

Loved her since “Henry V”. I just watched “Sense and Sensibility” again the other night. She is so wonderful. I want to do shots in the limo with her.

    • Kent Roby

Atta girl, way to go ruining the look of a great coat.

    • @Biting Panda

Let’s all agree to pretend this never happened.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Some sort of demon is about to burst from the hellmouth on her chest.

      • Sarah

Could it be…a demon HOUND….with lots of TEETH?

        • formerlyAnon

You are terrible, and this might be why you are beloved.

          • Sarah

    • Kent Roby

Last photo caption: “I just peeked under Ewan’s robe”

    • Gatto Nero

One print-scale change too many. The chestal detail is making my head spin.
And is her hair getting even more platinum?
That said, I want to buy her a drink this instant.

    • formerlyAnon

Great coat and boots. Not with whatever that is underneath, though.

I’d be SUCH a whiny celebrity. These runs where they’re photographed at 12 events in a week, plus “fortuitous” on-the-street “casual” shots would make me such a bitch, even if I was paying an entire staff to orchestrate the onslaught.

      • MilaXX

        I’m such a peacock. I’d love it.

        • formerlyAnon

This is why, whenever you’ve described an ensemble you are wearing/might wear, it sounds appealing and dashing. Whereas my typical wardrobe ranges from utter schlub to ’70s lesbian through to middle-aged-mom-still-faintly-trying at its peak.

    • NMMagpie

Wow… Op Art makes it to fashion in a not good way.

    • Akemi

What in the hell? My eyeballs actually hurt.

    • Aurumgirl

The only thing I really hate about this look is that the pattern on that ski turtleneck just makes the whole look too much work. Basic black or cream under there and we’d b fine. As for everything else, she looks ecstatic, like she’s having a great time. That is filling up the photo more than anything else, and it’s making her look fantastic.

    • lunchcoma

I’m sad now. I adore houndstooth, think people should wear it all the time, but still can’t endorse this particular combination. It feels like betraying my principles to hate it, though.

      • formerlyAnon

Just hate whatever she has on underneath. The houndstooth coat is fine.

    • ScarlettHarlot

You know, Emma, your hair doesn’t HAVE to match your houndstooth.

    • JR Labrador

“Attend the tale of Emma Thom.
Her taste was off and she showed up bombed.”

      • AllisonAndStuff

Nope, she was in the show.

    • Danielle

      WHOOOOO BOY. *pops Excedrin*

      • demidaemon

I had a headache before this. I don’t know what I’m at now.

    • MilaXX

A black dress or even better a red dress would have been all she needed. That and to comb her hair. Love her, but this is awful.

    • htdp1

It’s just scary that she put that outfit together thinking they go together.

    • flamingoNW

Yikes. And the worst hair I’ve seen in ages

    • Dagney

I have this image in my mind of Helen Mirren, Judy Dench, and Charlotte Rampling giving her a slap across the face. And some more chic clothing.

    • mia

I really don’t like her blonde hair. It seems to harden her much more than her darker hair did.

    • Trickytrisha

Bless her heart, written in Southern style. I watched Howard’s End a few days ago and fell in love with her all over again. Good thing I hadn’t seen these pictures first.

      • Sarah

You would still love her. Much Ado About Nothing did it for me, and I forgive all things she ever wears in perpetuity.

        • Trickytrisha

You’re right, I would and do still love the quirky, hilarious woman that she is.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Howard’s End, Sense and Sensibility-love Emma!

    • Alyssa

Why did she have to ruin such an amazing coat by pairing it with a competing pattern? I’ll take the coat, I know what to wear it with!

    • Judy_J

Coincidentally, I am wearing a hounds tooth checked pullover today. I love the outer garment, but it is clashing mightily with whatever she’s got on under it. This is a bridge too far, that’s for sure.

    • MightyMarshal

This looks like Glen Close as Cruelle De Ville.

    • kimmeister

I’m amazed that coat can even stay on her shoulders. It looks like she can’t even straighten her arms, or else it will fall off.

    • decormaven

Too much the same pattern, plus the creamy white in the wrap/coat is fighting with the dead-on white in the turtleneck. If she’d let me have a swig from her bottle, I’d probably laugh it off, too.

    • nannypoo

What is so damn funny with her all the time?

    • colleenjanel

I love this daffy woman so much that she gets a pass from me!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Agreed that this is horrifying. But my God I love this SO MUCH and I love her SO MUCH.

    • wildemoose

It’s been so flipping cold for so long that I can’t bring myself to snark on any celebrity who appears to be dressed warmly.

    • AmeliaEve

It’s a swirling vortex that is pulling all the houndstooth in the world down into Emma’s bosom.

    • http://ediblecville.blogspot.com Libby

Girlfren got the cray cray eyes….

    • Elana Bryan

Glad I don’t have epilepsy. At least I didn’t until looking at this.Woah.

    • OffToSeeHim

I was sure it was going to be the hair. That is some weird hair.

    • Pennymac

Don’t know about the photographers, but I sure have one….

    • http://journal.translarte.de/ Muyserin

She looked great at THR Actresses round table.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Memories of television horizontal button, vertical tubes and test patterns. My brain just fizzle out. Emma, why?

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I kind of love this. Maybe it has something to do with her infectious smile combined with my love of black and white. Maybe I just love it because it’s so wacky. Hmmm

    • RescueMe23

      She crazy!

    • Qitkat

Dotty English aunt wearing a Rorschach Test. I love her and hate this at the same time.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Emma, I love you, just come clean and tell us how many bottles of Chardonnay you put away before you got ready for this event.

      • AllisonAndStuff

She was in the show, so, none? It’s a three-hour thing, I think we can forgive her looking like she ran a marathon and got a burst of energy at the end…because she sort of did.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I didn’t realize she was in the show-so, yes, she definitely gets a pass, given the time and energy spent

    • KT

Oh wow this really hurts my eyes. And I’m sure she is LOVING fucking with all of us. Bless her.

    • amaranth16

Oh, those patterns make my eyes hurt. But her face is gorgeous!

    • majorbedhead

A red top would have worked so much better with this. But I love the coat. I do love a good hounds tooth.

I would love to take her to my local and ply her with drinks and just chat all evening. She’s fantastic.

    • demidaemon

My guess would be yes. If so, I salute her as I shield my eyes.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

That glee is actually saying, “getmethef*ckoutahere*

    • Janice Bartels

I love my best friend even when she looks like an optical illusion!

    • quiltrx

Love the coat/wrap/thing, but yikes to the rest and her hair.
She’s either drunk or having the time of her life, and I hope it’s the latter!

      • AllisonAndStuff

The latter. She was in this. And apparently was amazing.

    • marlie

It hurts my eyes to look too closely at the top of her look. All Aunt Emma needed was a solid shirt, and this very well might have been a WERQ for her (because I seriously love the houndstooth cape thingy). So close, Ant Emma, SO close.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

You guys know she was starring the the show, right? There’s a great review for her in the NYT. She has a right to look a little messed up!

      • AllisonAndStuff

THANK you. Driving me nuts. Of course she looks like that, she just Best Pies In London-ed all over the place for three hours.

    • BeeBeauNYC

She needs to save that jacket for Sybill Trelawney.

    • Sam Smith

Luv the coat, luv her, wish she had paired the coat with something better.

    • Sally Spannagle

Yeah, her schtick is getting old…

    • AllisonAndStuff

Yeah, she just got done doing a three-hour musical. I’m willing to forgive a lot.

    • Angela Cotsones Shea

The shirt pattern looks like the thorax of a wasp

    • kategs

I love her too too much to say what I really want to.

    • Lilyana_F

      Oh lol. Bless this mess!

    • Calvin Philips

It looks like a Rorschach test. I see a hot mess.

    • http://moretti-loves-witkens.tumblr.com Joanna Moretti

      My eyes!!!

    • altissima

Nu-urse! She’s out of bed again!

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

      She looks completely high.

    • Toby Wollin

From the ‘if I make it match, then no one will criticize’ school of dressing. She could have gone with something red (that would have been dashing), or mustard yellow (groundbreaking), or even God-help-us, black. I don’t know if that’s a dress or a top but it made my eyes hurt.

    • Columbinia

My eyes hurt trying to figure this out. It could have been great without the nearly-matching-but-actually-clashing prints thing. As it is, it occupies a razor-thin territory between not good and not bad. Gotta love Emma’s enjoyment of the whole red carpet thing. “Dotty English aunt schtick” sums it up nicely, with the note that sitting next to this one would be a riot.

    • AES

She had just finished doing 2-1/2 hours on stage – And she was fucking brilliant in the part. I think maybe I will give her a pass.
