Hailee Steinfeld in Andrew Gn at the Weinstein’s Golden Globes After Party

Posted on January 15, 2014

Sometimes, you just have to put aside your prejudices. Sometimes, a blogger just has to let go.

See, we’re very much on the record (over and over and over again) as people who don’t love over-the-shoulder “mermaid” hair and flat out hate almost every instance of an extended sheer hem on a skirt. But dammit, she looks really cute and kinda fabulous here. Maybe it’s because we’re also on record as people who are total suckers for a black-and-gold combo.

Are the birds and stars a bit too much? They might be, on a different wearer. But on Hailee, they take on a whimsical tone that suits her age while the dress overall allows her to be sophisticated. We don’t think we like the sleeves all that much, though.

  • Love it all, except for the flat, combed back bit on the crown of the head. That style seems to be having a moment and I want it to stop, now, before it gets out of hand.

  • Supernumerary

From a distance, the birds and stars look like someone went a little crazy with the puff paint.

    • TrixieConQueso

      “Put a bird on it!”

    • Vtg Fashion Library

Makes me think of Mockingjay, and Hailee isn’t even in it. And she needs lip color.

  • MarieLD

Always thought she should have played Katniss. Love JLaw, but Hailee seems more right for the role.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

I can only imagine that she didn’t want the role or completely muffed the audition because – much as I love Jennifer Lawrence – physically Hailee would have been better for the part.

  • Introspective

cute. grown up and yet girly, without making her look overtly sexy. just the kind of wheelhouse she should be in at this age.

    i like!

  • Diego!

Gorgeous. She looks stunning and she grew up a lot, or at least that’s what I see whith her wearing this make up. The dress looks stunning on her and I love her hair. It’s so perfectly combed. I’d give her an ‘Attagirl”. I see the lack a bracelet or a big ring for the WERQ. But I love this look.

  • Sobaika

Very cute look. She needs a new hair and makeup gay, though.

    • random_poster

Yes. That makeup is caked on way too thick.

    • Sam Erin

Absolutely. Love her full brows but someone needs to reign them in, as well.

  • Alyssa Caruso Ivins

i couldn’t decide if i liked this or not when i saw it!

  • I would be fully on board without the stupid sheer panel.

    • conniemd

I loved the material of the dress at first glance, as I’m a sucker for black and gold too, and it had just the right amount of glittery birds and stars. I completely share your hatred of sheer panels, but in this case, I kinda forgive, first because the sheer starts at mid thigh so I’m not worried about seeing her whohaw or feel that its trying to hard to be sexy. Second, the sheer kinda relieves the heaviness of the material and sequins and still allows it to be a full length dress.

    • Judy_S

I agree. It seems to me like a cute dressy little dress with a curtain hanging on it.

    • butterflysunita

Yes, this would be a really cute look without the extended sheer hem. It’s just too much.

  • MilaXX

It looks a skoosh too long but otherwise cute.

  • MW

I wish the hem just ended above the knee. Otherwise she looks gorgeous.

  • Super_Red

She looks incredible. And I despise skirts like this. I think I’d like the dress better if it ended where the sheer starts, but then it would probably look too matronly on her. She is making it work. Snaps, girl!

  • She needs the bracelet that Vincent Gardenia gave to Anita Gilette in “Moonstruck”……”The birds fly to the stars.” She looks fine and I, like you, don’t mind the dress that much, but her makeup & hair people let her down on this one. A kiss on the hand may be quite continental/but tweezers are a girl’s best friend.

    • AnneElliot

YES! Moonstruck was my first thought exactly! Too funny.

And I agree about the brows.

  • Jessica Freeman

I think it looks like a home ec project gone awry. Without the sheer bottom, it may have been much better.

  • marlie

I think the sheer skirt part is a little too old for her, but there’s no denying that she looks really pretty. I love the black and gold combo.

  • teensmom99

Yes! And on the model, I hate the sheer part but it works on Miss Hailee. Just looks like a teen having fun with a sophisticated look.

  • sojourneryouth

The dress is so wrong, and yet so right on her. And those EYES! She is such a gorgeous girl.

    • Anna_Cecilia

Agreed, can you imagine the catastrophe this would be on Zoe Saldana?

  • decormaven

I’d vote for some dangly earrings that reflect the metallic shade found in the dress embellishments. Other than that minor adjustment, I would say this look is a go.

  • tallgirl1204

It’s the right look on the right girl. This is why rules are made, so a clever person can break them appropriately. Why am I thinking of Bach and the rules of counterpoint in classical music right now?

  • moxie_lady

    Her eyebrows are glorious.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

What I love the most about this look is that the gold figures set off her eyes, I’ve never noticed that they have golden hints.

I would put her and Kiernan Shipka on a Red Carpet together for a style competition (it’s a motherfucking walk-off!), I would watch the shit out of it as they bring all their style arsenal to stage.

    • butterflysunita

Love the PR season 2 reference! My favorite season.

  • Janet B

Luckily, I’m not a blogger. I don’t like this at all.

Sheer skirt, weird sleeves and unflattering hair style.

  • Am I missing something? Where’s the Forevermark jewelry? I’m not a fan of this look for her.

    • MartyBellerMask

Weensy lil bracelet on her right wrist.

      • Ha! I thought that was just her wrist crease. Hardly worth mentioning.

  • Anne

“They’re little birds and stars. Birds fly to the stars, I guess.”

    • J-Ko

“You have such a head for knowing.”

      • Anne

        Ohhhhhh, Cosmoooooo.

      • AnneElliot

One of my favorite movies. I quote that line to my husband all the time.

  • nannypoo

I would love this without the overskirt. She’s adorable.

  • Little_Olive

Oh, I love that dress! Her face on the other hand is making me sad.

  • Danielle

  • Nancer

I’m with you on this one. Not a fan of sheer underskirts, but this is really well done. Maybe this is the look that all of those frankendresses have been trying – and failing – to achieve. I think it has something to do with proportion, and with not letting the sheer underskirt get too gimmicky.

  • Victoria Anzalone

There isn’t a single bit about this that I don’t LOVE TO PIECES.

  • Mismarker

I am loving her beautiful, natural brows.

  • ailujailuj

Mms. Uncles is scarin this kitten…. makeup is pretty though. And she is posing like a pro. good for you girl.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

LOVE the Stars and Birds. The hair is fine. HATE the sheer skirt thingy, though!

  • snarkykitten

no. it looks like every cliche white girl tattoo in dress form

  • Crystal

She is really pretty and I hate that sheer panel slightly less than other panels. There’s my positive for the day.

  • EveEve

Didn’t see her at the Golden Globes; was she there? I presume since the movies she was in this year didn’t get any nominations, she might not have been invited. Anyway since this was an Andrew Gn party, and she’s wearing an Andrew Gn dress, I’m guessing she just showed up and did as she was instructed (to wit: make sure she got photographed!). As for as the accesorizing with Forevermark jewelry…well, there is that itty bitty gold bracelet. Earrings and a ring would have been nice. Not loving the makeup – way to muck up a young lady’s eyes.

  • elemspbee

This dress would look great on Helen Mirren!

  • Pepper Collins

It’s easy to picture the dress without the sleeves, but I almost feel like it would become a bit unbalanced and somewhat ’90s.

  • jw_ny

The sleeves are one of my favorite parts of this gown…they’re different and set the gown apart from the other standard sleeveless &/or chiffon ones.

I am beginning to question myself as to whether or not I like side ponies, mermaid hair, and sheer over minis….there have been rare, well deployed cases recently that have me changing my attitude. This is one of those rare cases, because she looks lovely here.

  • IAmJ

    Dem brows though.

  • kimmeister

That eye makeup in combination with those brows is a bit much for me. I’m happy to see a non-nude lip color though!

    • Is she wearing lip colour? I thought those were just her lips!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

The sheer hem on Hailee doesn’t bother me so much because the shorter skirt is longer on her than the model, and the inverse tulip shape helps as well.
I love the birds and stars … on her.

  • Liz Lake

She’s young and cute. Love the whimsy of the dress (although why are sheer skirts still here to stay!?) especially on Hailee who is darling enough to pull it off without making anyone want to gag themselves. Still, I can’t help but wish something different was happening with the makeup and the hair.

  • Tatiana Luján

I feel the urge to clean her eyes.

  • semirose

I think I’d like it more if it was just the birds but she does look great. It definitely suits Hailee better than the model, I think because of her height.

  • Trickytrisha

A little brow grooming and less eye makeup and this would be super adorable, if a tad sophisticated. I forget how old she is now, so maybe it’s not too old for her.

  • Dagney

What is wrong with her makeup? Oh dear…

  • quiltrx

Interesting dress…I don’t really like the sheer, but this is probably the most tolerable instance of it that I’ve seen. Her makeup really doesn’t look right, though.

  • CT14

    It’s because she’s 14. That’s why the hair works.

I’m not sold on the sheer hem. The birds are great, again because she’s 14 or so.

  • VicD

I like this – even the sleeves, but think she’s wearing too much makeup.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m ok with the hair but I will not accept the sheer expanse at the bottom. Looks like she has her own shower curtain attached, just in case.

  • elzatelzabelz

I like the top fine, but I am done with the sheer. It would have worked fine cut off-or full length. Why the sheer? WHY.

  • amaranth16

I generally dislike the sheer thing, too, but I think this looks lovely – I think because the sheer is so dense that parts of it look opaque.

  • CommentsByKatie

I truly adore this. This is how I would want to dress if I were a celebrity – and I rarely feel that way! Dark, a little draggy, but still elegant beautiful chiffon…I just love it.

  • oatmealpie

I wish Jennifer Lawrence had worn this dress to the Catching Fire premier.
