Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller each stepped up their fashion game in similar ways for the London premiere. They both stuck to the styles they’ve long tended to prefer (for him, a showy suit; for her, a simple but dramatic dress), but it feels like they decided to turn the dials up to eleven this time.

We thank them for their service but we will also nitpick their choices to death.

Is there such a thing as too many stripes? We have to say yes to that, but we go back and forth on whether this outfit is an example. In the so-called real world, on a so-called regular person, we think that shirt would wind up fighting with the suit too much, but one reason why stars can get away with outfits that the rest of us can’t (aside from the likelihood of them being far more attractive than the average person) is because no matter what they wear, they know all eyes will go to their famous face. So in this instance, we think he can get away with the competing prints. Or maybe we’re just being kind because we appreciate that he wore a belt.

Given the utterly wrinkle-free state of her gown, we presume that she was transported to the red carpet in a horse trailer or lowered onto it from a helicopter. This is extremely well-suited to her; so much so that we’d be likely to dislike it if not outright hate it on a different wearer. But she has shown both a preference and knack for wearing these sort of minimalist but dramatic looks. It’s like a high-fashion choir robe, which seems somehow to be perfect for her. If we’re being honest, we don’t like the shape or design of the bodice. The seaming and the shape of the sleeves look dowdy to us. But the skirt and color are so dramatic that it makes up for the plainness on top. Love the ring.
