Everything from Shakerism’s belief in gender equality and a dual-gendered God to the practice of celibacy can be traced back to her teachings. Then, in 1774, Lee and a small group of followers took the movement to America—a movement that, by many accounts, painted Lee as the second coming of Jesus Christ.
