Yesterday morning, we got up and saw that the premiere for Now You See Me Now You Don’t happened and assumed we’d be featuring the extensive cast later that day on our site. Then we opened the folder and saw that every single member of the cast showed up in black, with most of them wearing the most generic black suits or dresses in creation. Then there was Rosamund Pike, who always understands the assignment:

Thus, she is the only member of the cast featured here. While we can’t claim that her castmates are bereft over this news, we do think it’s important that stars understand how promotional efforts work. If you want people to know about your project and you’re trying to convince them to take a look at it, you need to give them something to actually look at. That’s been a theatrical tradition as old as theater itself. While we can understand the impulse to dress all in black for your little magician movie, this tends to illustrate our issue with theme-dressing. Great. You all stuck to a theme and you all look completely forgettable. Rosamund knows how this works and she always has. We don’t think she’s ever shown up anywhere in a forgettable outfit. Do we like this dress on the merits? Not really, although it looks better than all that yellow satin has a right to. We could’ve done without the fringed scarf or the weird dropped-waist embellishment, but she’s well suited to the style and we thank her for her service.
