Rose Byrne Is Queen of the Curveball

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You may be her biggest surprise yet.

Rose on playing a mother in her new film, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You:

“Mothers are both revered and ignored; there’s this duality. It’s so hard to chat about motherhood, because you feel if you’re anything but delighted, there’s a lot of shame around that. The movie is blowing all that up and making you pay attention. You have to acknowledge this woman, even though she’s making terrible choices.”

Rose on her most memorable audition:

“I’m not going to name names, but I remember auditioning in my 20s with a really famous actor. All of a sudden he broke into song, singing about the characters and their names out of nowhere. And me going, “Is this part of the audition? Do I have to sing, too? What’s happening?” I’m still waiting to hear back about that one.”

Rose on career disappointments:

“You always want a winner. You want it to be a success in some way, but invariably it just isn’t. It’s really hard to make a good movie. Its really hard to be in a good play. That’s why there are so few, right? And probably why there are so many of us trying to chase the thing. All you have is the work on the day. That is ours, that’s the actors’, that is the performance, and no one can take that moment away.”
