Brie Larson has co-authored a new cook book (Party People: A Cookbook for Creative Celebrations) and she’s been making the kind of publicity rounds most other authors would sell their kidneys for while wearing some extremely retro ladylike styles.

There’s retro and then there’s “Depression era dustbowl wife.” There’s nothing terribly wrong with this style, but this textile is flimsy and the print is kind of drearily unphotogenic. We think it might have been improved if the accessories had played with the blue and yellow in the dress, but these black pieces just make it look dingy.

From the thirties to the eighties, overnight. First, let’s just get this out of the way: yes, that’s a purse and yes, that’s dumb. Again, we can sort of see why she might want to cycle through some retro styles, but she’s pulling from some odd references that don’t really have that domestic goddess vibe. This is ’80s Power Bitch fashion. It’s also way too much satin and she really can’t handle that yellow well.

She is much, much better off going this route: retro-inspired without being literal about it. The print is pretty and very photogenic. The shoes lend it a modernity and even a slight sense of seriousness (she is on a book tour, after all), and that cookie tin bag is legitimately cute and clever. We would have switched the belt out for black leather, just to give it a bit more of a fresh feel.
