Molly Gordon is gearing up for a buzzy summer with the new season of THE BEAR, her dark comedy OH, HI!, and beginning shooting for PEAKED, her solo directorial debut. Gordon talks to VANITY FAIR’s Rebecca Ford for the June issue Vanities Digital Cover about getting into acting, her friendship with Ayo Adibiri and Rachel Sennott, a rumored romance with Jeremy Allen White, and more.
On playing Carmy’s romantic interest in The Bear: “[I]t’s been kind of controversial to bring a romantic element into the show…That’s been at times annoying, fascinating, and interesting—just to be a part of something that people have opinions on.”
On the tabloid photos of her and Jeremy Allen White found kissing off-set: “With the internet, I just think—I even see it in myself as a fan of things—we’re just a more judgmental society.”
On the modern dating landscape and what they wanted to explore in her new film Oh, Hi!: “With apps, it’s just such a hard time to date in our modern age…We just wanted to make something that is about how hard it is to just be honest about how you feel about someone.”
On wanting to play a great and crazy character: “There’s just still not that many great female characters out there—the kind of wild characters usually played by men.”
On dropping out of college to pursue her acting career at 18yo: “I was really brave when I was 18. I don’t think I’ll ever be as cool as I was then…I feel like people looked down on me a bit. I seemed a little lost, which I was. But I kind of needed to be in that moment.”
On her friendship with co-stars and peers such as Ayo Edibiri and Rachel Sennott: “I actually can’t imagine that I would have a career without those girls…don’t really have any doctor friends—I’m kind of friends with this circus. We’re all insane.”
