We do so love it when Dame Helen remembers that, around these parts, she’s known as the Queen of the sovereign nation of Fuckinfantastica. Her Majesty ditched the Sicilian widow’s weeds that Dolce & Gabbana keep shoving her into and opted to get in touch with her regal side on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.
You can tell she’s feeling it. Queen, you need to dress like this all the time. The gown is very simple, but the impact is high. That aquamarine bow and train make the look. We love the accentuated shoulders. The gown would have been fine on its own. It certainly doesn’t need the hat or the drop-dead jewelry, but if a queen can’t get a little maximalist and ostentatious on a Cannes red carpet, then when can she?
According to her stylist Lee Harris, this is the final Badgley Mischka red carpet gown because Mark and James are retiring, which makes us a little misty. They were absolute mainstays of ’90s and aughts red carpetry and they may have been the very first designers to follow us on social media. We wish them both well in their retirement and thank them for the red carpet memories.
