The Bode Fall 2025 collection is a tribute to American composer Morris “Moose” Charlap, a prominent figure in the history of American musical theater.

Praised by contemporaries like Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim, Charlap was known for his tremendous output and extraordinary range as a musical theater composer and writer of popular songs. Best known for the score to Broadway’s Peter Pan, Charlap died young, before much of his work could be fully realized.

FW25 The Expressionist draws its name from Charlap’s last, unfinished musical, written with lyricist Eddie Lawrence—the life story of a painter, set against the post-Impressionist landscape of Paris. It is a visual songbook of a life in music, following Charlap through childhood summers in the Poconos; early years in New York theater; time in Paris, where Lawrence studied painting in Fernand Léger’s studio; and work on celebrated musicals Peter Pan and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

These references thread throughout the collection, recalling a New York City alive with arts and culture, show business and Modernist painting, Birdland and the Algonquin. The collection reflects the electricity of midcentury Manhattan and the legendary talents who populated it—the vibrant world of Moose Charlap.

With thanks to the Charlap and Lawrence families.
