As we noted with the Fernanda Torres post, watching a newly minted star navigate her first awards season is one of our favorite parts of this job; especially if said newly minted star quickly learns to embrace high fashion as a tool in her self-promotional arsenal. A Complete Unknown star Monica Barbaro may not have assumed from the jump that she was a lock on a nomination so her earlier red carpet looks are more in the “I’m hot and I’m not Joan Baez” mode, but they shifted into a sleeker, more prestige actress style as the season went on.

She’s a little all over the map, but that’s not a bad thing. More established nominees like Cynthia Erivo and Demi Moore have locked-in styles that they’ve spent years if not decades perfect and fine-tuning. But when all of this is new, the style results tend to be a little more haphazard and uneven. Given the range of styles on display here, it’s actually pretty impressive that none of them are true disasters. Clearly, she’s better off when she sticks to sleek styles and we suspect that’s how she’s going for the big night. On the other hand, she doesn’t have an established style which makes her the most likely nominee to show up in something surprising. Go on, girl. Shock us.
