Our first impulse, when Emilia Perez star Zoe Saldana walked out onto the Jimmy Kimmel set, was to note that she appeared to be her in the “sassy short dress” phase of her Oscar campaign, since she wore a similarly sassy frock to the Directors Guild Awards over the weekend. Unfortunately, that impulse of ours died immediately when she sat down.
We’d say that’s the epitome of the walking-out dress but we’re not convinced it even looks all that great when she’s walking out. It strikes us as a design that requires very specific posing (and pretty much no other movement) in order to work for the wearer. She does look great in it. Short and quirky dresses would seem to be her style sweet. But the effect is weird and distracting when she sits down. What really makes the look are the shoes, which she seems to enjoy showing off. We’d normally find them pretty focus-pulling if not overdesigned, but they work really well here.
