Joan Plowright, Venerable Legend of the British Stage, Dies at 95
She won a Tony, was nominated for an Oscar and was married to Laurence Olivier for nearly three decades.
Joan Plowright, the distinguished actress of the post-war British stage whose considerable skill as a performer was at times eclipsed by her fame as the third and last wife of Laurence Olivier, has died. She was 95.
Plowright died on Jan. 16 surrounded by family in her native U.K. A statement from the family released on Friday to the BBC said: “It is with great sadness that the family of Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, inform you that she passed away peacefully on January 16 2025 surrounded by her family at Denville Hall aged 95.”

“Her brilliant career will be remembered by many, her wonderful being always cherished by her children Richard, Tamsin and Julie-Kate, their families and Joan’s many friends. We are deeply grateful for all those who helped care for her in her last years.”
David Lynch, a Visionary Director Who Spoke to Our Darker Selves
Laying bare American life’s hidden horrors and absurdities, the auteur behind ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Twin Peaks’ held up a distorted but unsettlingly truthful mirror.
Rare is the artist whose work is such a game-changer that the only way to describe it is to transform their last name into an adjective. Even rarer is the chance of that ever happening in Hollywood, a place where creativity, especially of the dark and deranged kind, tends to take a back seat to commercial viability and the all-powerful bottom line.
Yet somehow, David Lynch, who passed away Thursday at the age of 78, not only directed a game-changing array of films that can only be defined as Lynchian. He did it a time when the American movie business began to grow, and then balloon, into a franchise-driven behemoth where his brand of off-the-wall work was the last thing the studios wanted.
David Lynch, Visionary Filmmaker Behind Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, Dies at 78
“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” his family shared in a statement. “But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’”
Perplexity was his favorite medium. The filmmaker dedicated most of his work to creating feelings of wonder or dread rather than making literal sense, although he was capable of surprising audiences with a linear narrative now and then—as with the 1999 drama The Straight Story. In that earnestly heartwarming drama, Richard Farnsworth played an elderly man who can no longer drive a car, so instead he pilots his riding lawn mower across two states to make amends with an ailing brother. Far more often, Lynch leaned into the eerie and unsettling.
The search is over—these are the 19 best mascaras in 2025 for length, volume and definition
It’s taken years of research
In every make-up bag up and down the country you will find mascara. It is arguably the most used make-up product in our collective beauty kit. In fact, as a beauty editor, there is not a day that goes by that I leave the house without it. But what actually makes the best mascara the best? Let’s find out…
Eye bags and muted tones—Lily-Rose Depp makes a case for “Victorian Gothic” beauty
Think: the complete opposite of ‘clean girl’
Like any self-respecting horror lover, I hightailed it to the cinema upon the release of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu — a remake of the 1922 classic, silent film, and a thinly-veiled Dracula story, for the uninitiated. There’s much to be said, but especially about Lily-Rose Depp’s breakout performance as Ellen, a troubled young bride, and the subject of the vampire’s twisted obsessions. But what piqued my interest amongst the jump scares was the actor’s make-up, on-screen—which perfectly embodied the modern-day conception of Victorian-era, gothic beauty—and off-screen, which updated and sexed up the look for 2024.
Psst—these beauty experts just predicted the 7 things that will be huge for beauty in 2025
This just in: your beauty forecast
I’m not sure of the exact moment I felt like we’d reached peak beauty microtrend, but in recent years it certainly felt like the trend carousel was going faster than ever at times. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good viral hair or make-up moment, but I can understand why consumers were feeling fatigued by the constant naming (and renaming) of beauty trends.
So how do you tell what makes a true make-up or hair trend in 2025? Some trends are obviously gimmicky from the get-go, while others seem sure to stick around for the entire season at least, but it’s not always easy to tell which will be fleeting viral moments versus longer-standing trends.
Seed oils are under attack, but are they actually bad for you?
Trending claims that they’re toxic or inflammatory are totally bunk, according to nutrition scientists.
In wellness-minded corners of the internet, seed oils (a.k.a. oils made from the seeds of plants) have been pariahs for several years, with folks of varying credentials calling them out as “toxic,” branding a set of them as “the hateful eight,” and even suggesting they’re the root cause of a swath of chronic diseases. But as of late, they’ve soared to mainstream infamy, as influencers on TikTok have taken to disparaging these oils and, notably, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (president-elect Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services) has claimed that we’re being “unknowingly poisoned” by them. But should we really view seed oils as Public Enemy No. 1?

Every year, the Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, ushers in a new reigning animal representing one of the 12 zodiac signs. So, with the 29 January Chinese New Year this year, we will officially be entering the Year of the Snake.
The 25 Best Books About (And By) First Ladies
From memoirs to biographies, here are the best books to about what it’s really like to be the most famous woman in America.
The role of First Lady of the United States has evolved since Martha Washington’s husband, George, took the oath of office in 1789. Notably, Martha wasn’t even called first lady—the title wasn’t coined until decades after her death. America’s first First Lady was actually not even married to the president; James Buchanan’s niece, Harriet Lane, was the first woman to carry the title in 1857. (Buchanan, the 15th president of the U.S., was a lifelong bachelor and the only U.S. president never to have married, so Lane stepped up.)
Over the centuries, the position of the presidential spouse has become part of the fabric of this country’s executive branch and its traditions, and yet, given that it is not an official post with duties outlined in the constitution, each first lady has shaped the job to fit her personality, her ambitions, and the time in which she served.
These 24 books present a wide array of perspectives on the role of First Lady—from memoirs by Julia Grant, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Michelle Obama, to biographies on Jackie Kennedy, Barbara Bush, and Louisa Adams.

Why Drinking Bottled Water Can Be Much Worse for You Than Tap, According to New Research
“The FDA hardly has any regulations at all for bottled water.”
The health halo surrounding bottled water is starting to burst.
Bottled water first became popular in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s, with many brands aligning themselves with health and fitness. Today, 96% of Americans buy bottled water and nearly one in five only drink bottled water. However, a growing body of research has found that bottled water has its own challenges — and regular tap water may be better in most situations.
Neil Gaiman and the problem of faux feminists
What happens to supposedly “enlightened” men in the post-Me Too era?
The faux-feminist man who is accused of being a secret predator is by now, after the revelations of the Me Too movement, a familiar figure. A few years ago, when Me Too was raging through Hollywood, former liberal darlings Louis C.K. and Joss Whedon saw their whole legacies re-evaluated after being accused of sexual misconduct on C.K.’s part and bullying on Whedon’s. (Whedon has denied all the allegations.) Now, two new famous feminist men have been accused of gendered misconduct — but these revelations come at a moment when our culture appears to be far less interested in performing a reckoning.
David Lynch, ‘Twin Peaks’ and the American Art of Television
“Twin Peaks” was his ultimate portrait of a land of terror and beauty.
Is “Twin Peaks” the most American TV series ever made? It is, maybe, not the first series that a nation would happily choose as its calling card: a murder mystery, surreal and haunted, that involves the sacrifice of the innocent against a backdrop of mountain majesties and small-town diners. In it, David Lynch, who died at age 78, jimmied up the floorboards of the American dream and loosed a swarm of evil spirits from beneath.
Joan Plowright, Award-Winning Actress and Olivier’s Widow, Dies at 95
She won many accolades — and was honored with a damehood — during a seven-decade career on the London stage, in film and on Broadway.
Joan Plowright, the British actress who brought an innate dignity to her characters, whether she was playing an elegant, name-dropping dowager or a working-class teenager, died on Thursday in Northwood, England. She was 95.
Her daughter Julie-Kate Olivier, said she died at Denville Hall, a care home for people who have worked in the theatrical industry.
Although she will always be associated with her 28-year marriage to Laurence Olivier, one of Britain’s most revered actors, Ms. Plowright had more than her share of shining moments.
Woman Gifts Mother-in-Law $2 Thrifted Boots. Days Later, She Gets a Text Asking for the Gift Receipt
Earlier this summer, Cara Isaacs was at a garage sale when she came across a pair of Life Stride booties she thought her mother-in-law would like
Earlier this summer, Cara Isaacs was at a garage sale when she came across a pair of Life Stride booties. The shoes still had the tissue paper inside the boot and wrapped around the boot tassels, and were on sale for only $2.
The Chicago local decided to purchase them as a gift for her mother-in-law, and gave them to her during the holidays. Upon opening the box, Isaacs told her to let her know if they didn’t fit. “I truly did not believe they wouldn’t work for her. They were her size and just her style,” Isaacs tells PEOPLE exclusively.
But a few days later the 33-year-old received a message from her mother-in-law kindly asking if she had a gift receipt and if it would be okay if she exchanged the boots.
Joan Plowright, Acting Legend of Stage and Screen and Laurence Olivier’s Widow, Dies at 95
Plowright was no stranger to comedy: She was a standout in Lawrence Kasdan’s black comedy “I Love You to Death,” in which she played the mother of Tracy Ullman’s character, the wife of a pizzeria owner (Kevin Kline) who has cheated on her; Plowright’s mother urges her to have him killed, and hilarity ensues. Roger Ebert said, “Joan Plowright might seem like an unlikely choice as the mother, but gets the movie’s biggest laugh in a bedside scene.”
The actress also did television and was nominated for an Emmy in 1993 for her role in the HBO telepic “Stalin,” starring Robert Duvall.
Isabella Rossellini Remembers David Lynch: ‘I Loved Him So Much’

Taylor Kitsch and Josh Brolin on Shamans, Sweat Lodges, and Self-Transformation
First, Taylor Kitsch moved to Montana. Then came a New Year’s Eve spent with a shaman, and now, a television show at the top of Netflix’s charts. But let’s rewind a bit. For the past two years, the Friday Night Lights alum has been getting into character. He lost 25 pounds, tracked wolves, and visited the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, all of which helped him embody the role of Isaac Reed, a Shoshone-raised white man whose contested past seeps through the cracks of history in the gritty Netflix Western American Primeval, set during the 1857 Utah War. “Some of the best work of my life is on the floor of this, and I think that’s what I struggle with,” Kitsch told longtime friend Josh Brolin, who was on set for the making of the limited series. “You were such a fucking champion for me, man.” After the show’s release, Kitsch called Brolin for moral support, again. This time, they talked about sweat lodges, shamans, and giving yourself over to a role.
