‘Stella Stevens: The Last Starlet’ Review: A Loving, Insightful Documentary Tribute to an Underrated Actress
The famed star of films like ‘Girls! Girls! Girls!’ and ‘The Nutty Professor’ is the subject of a detailed profile directed by her son, Andrew Stevens.
Andrew Stevens pays loving but not hagiographic tribute to his late mother, famed actress Stella Stevens, in his documentary recently showcased at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. The film convincingly makes the case that its subject, best known for her performances in such pictures as The Poseidon Adventure and The Nutty Professor, is severely underrated, both as an actress and social activist. Stella Stevens: The Last Starlet aims to rectify that perception and, thanks to numerous clips of her work and effusive commentary by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Vivica A. Fox, it succeeds beautifully.
Lola Petticrew Wants Say Nothing’s Ending to Spark Tough Conversations
“The show says a lot of big, brave things,” says the star of FX’s acclaimed series about The Troubles. “Certainly English money would be too afraid to say them, because their government was instrumental in what happened.”
This article contains spoilers about the entirety of Say Nothing, through to the series finale.
Anyone who watches Say Nothing will remember the name Dolours Price. FX’s sprawling limited series (now streaming on Hulu) spans decades in its riveting, fraught, ultimately tragic portrait of that Irish Republican Army soldier, portrayed by Lola Petticrew and Maxine Peake in alternating timelines. Dolours leads deadly attacks, goes on hunger strike, facilitates the disappearance of people in her community—all in the initially romantic, later brutal pursuit of Irish independence. She’s our guide through The Troubles in Northern Ireland, expressing the kind of conflicted moral perspective that keeps her choices interesting, surprising, and all too human. Petticrew gives emotional dimension to Dolours’s every move as she’s entrenched more and more deeply into the resistance.
Enter Laughing: Mel Brooks’s Bombastic Brilliance
The comedy legend has ego to spare in his autobiography, which is most revealing when it digs into his marriage to Anne Bancroft.
“In my experience if you’re not working, you’re not really alive,” Mel Brooks writes in his 2021 autobiography, All About Me! My Remarkable Life in Show Business.
For once, he’s not kidding. The tireless Brooks, a writing, directing, acting and producing dynamo, is behind gut-busting comedy classics like Get Smart, The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. He has spent decades making subversive, edgy, anarchic comedies that have tackled serious subjects like antisemitism and racism, pushing the boundaries of “good taste.”
His love of comedy is evident throughout All About Me!, a must-read guidebook for any aspiring comic auteur. Full bits and gags from his glory days (most of which are still hilarious) are recorded, and the reader sees what a kick Brooks gets out of them to this day. He also lovingly describes the eccentric characters in his journey to the top who inspired some of his greatest films.
A Ready or Not sequel starring Samara Weaving is officially coming
Ready for it? The hit horror is back.
Ready or not, here she comes — again!
That’s right, the hit 2019 horror-comedy film, Ready or Not, is officially coming back for round two, as reported by Variety. And yes, Samara Weaving, who starred in the original film as a bride who finds herself in a sinister game with her creepy new in-laws, is set to reprise her role.
The original was downright terrifying — and also kind of hilarious. And we are so ready for another one. Here’s everything we know about the sequel so far.

Seaweed: good for your skin—and the planet
As the beauty world shifts toward sustainability, could seaweed be the ingredient that’ll really have a positive impact on your skin? Once mainly consumed for its nutrient-rich properties, seaweed is now making waves in skincare, praised for its hydration, anti-ageing and detoxifying properties. With eco-conscious brands increasingly tapping into marine resources, seaweed stands out as a key player in effective and sustainable skincare. As demand grows, there is a significant opportunity to harness ocean-sourced ingredients responsibly, supporting a more sustainable beauty industry.
I’ve tried them all—these are the only perfumes I’ll be wearing on my neck this festive season
Festive cheer in a bottle
Any fragrance enthusiast will tell you that there is a scent for every occasion—and that is no more evident than when it comes to festive perfumes. Among the best perfumes for women, there are some seriously beautiful scents that’ll get you in the mood for seasonal celebrations and cosy cheer.
I know what you’re thinking: Lucy, what constitutes a festive perfume here? Good question. Because the truth is that no single note – whether it be vanilla or oud – on its own is going to conjure that vibe for everyone. Perfume is so tied up in memory that what reminds me of celebrating Christmas could be totally different to what takes you back to holidays.
I’m about to tell you why capes make every outfit that little bit chicer
The unexpected revival
There’s something inherently costume-y about capes. Often associated with fairytale princesses, superheroes or villains, it’s no surprise they’ve often been considered, well, naff.
They enjoyed a brief revival in the Autumn/Winter 2017 collections, courtesy of designers like Mulberry and Temperley, before quietly fading away again. Until now, and believe me, the Autumn/Winter 2024 iteration of the trend is the complete opposite to naff. In fact, capes have never been so cool.
We first saw some capes trickle into last year’s Winter collections at the likes of Coperni and Michael Kors, but this season, they completely took over, with styles to suit all tastes – from sporty to demure.
Stop what you’re doing: these are the 6 best Pilates band exercises you can do to build strength from home, fast
Simple yet effective.
It’s easy to modify the intensity of a Pilates workout when you’re in a studio, working out under the watchful and enthusiastic eye of an instructor. But, when you’re getting your reps in at home or on-the-go, without access to a variety of equipment, it can be tricky to increase the difficulty. If you’re looking for a simple way to make your solo Pilates sessions more challenging and build strength in the process, you may want to introduce some of the best Pilates band exercises into your routine.
Thieves Broke Into the Windsor Castle Estate
Prince William and Kate and their three children were reported to be at their nearby home at the time of the break-in.
Since the summer of 2022, William, Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis have spent most of their time living in Adelaide Cottage in the Windsor Castle estate while the children attend school nearby. And today, the question of the estate’s security was in the spotlight as it emerged that last month thieves entered a farm building inside the perimeter and took two vehicles.
The Sun newspaper first reported the break-in, describing how “masked raiders” struck the estate “as the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children slept in their home nearby.” The publication said two men scaled a 6-foot fence and took a pick-up and quad bike from a barn. The report also said the break-in was at the Shaw Farm Gate to the estate, which is less than a mile from Adelaide Cottage.
Cheers to 50 Years of Chloë Sevigny!
The actor has been on the scene for more than half her life, earning her It-girl distinction in a sprawling seven-page article in The New Yorker in 1994. While Sevigny cut her teeth in film with Kids, her singular sense of style is not to be overlooked.
Sevigny knows no bounds when it comes to fashion. She offered a casual take on menswear at the 1999 Academy Awards nominees’ luncheon, donning a pair of gray shorts and a long, loose necktie. But, on the other end of the spectrum, she isn’t afraid to lean into the sex appeal, like when she wore a spring 2004 Louis Vuitton cutout dress by Marc Jacobs to play blackjack at Copacabana.
These days, Sevigny continues to live up to the It-girl name, strolling down the street in over-the-top Prada coats and variations on a classic ballet flat. And while she’s no stranger to the likes of Chanel Haute couture, Miu Miu (which she’s walked the runway for multiple times), and Saint Laurent (she currently is the face of a larger-than-life ad campaign), she also champions younger brands like Christopher John Rogers and Simone Rocha.

That’s without mentioning the best hotels in Bali, which emphasize its natural bounty—forested waterfalls, top-notch surf breaks, and hidden volcanic beaches are accessible at every turn.

The 4 New ‘It’ Apples (That Aren’t Honeycrisp)
Expect to see these varieties on shelves in the near future, if you haven’t already spotted them.
Apples are one of the most popular fruits in the U.S., with Americans noshing on an average of nine pounds per person each year. Though apples have been cultivated since Roman times (and wild apples date back even further), these days growers and agricultural scientists work to develop varieties that are economically viable, travel well for national distribution, and satisfy consumer tastes, such as sweetness, crispness, and a long storage life.
How to Calculate How Much Turkey You Need Per Guest
We did the math for you.
When you’re writing up your Thanksgiving shopping list, the turkey might give you the most pause. Should you go for fresh or frozen? Wet or dry brine? And — perhaps most important — what size should you buy to ensure that your guests go home with a full stomach and that you’ll have plenty of leftovers for turkey sandwiches? Whether you’re hosting a small family affair or party of 15, here’s a cheat sheet for exactly how much turkey you need per guest.
Pumpkin Pie Spice vs. Apple Pie Spice: What’s the Difference?
Learn what goes into these iconic fall flavors.
Close your eyes and imagine a fragrant slice of pumpkin pie. What flavors come to mind? Sure, there’s pumpkin in pumpkin pie, but it just wouldn’t be the same without the warming notes of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.
Manufacturers have bottled this unique blend of spices to make it that much easier to add fall flavor to everything from pie to cocktails. (And yes, coffee.) But what exactly is in pumpkin pie spice, and how does it differ from apple pie spice? Here’s everything you need to know about these spice aisle favorites.
Why so many families are “drowning in toys”
America is in toy overload, and it might just be ruining fun.
It’s a familiar refrain among parents: One reader told Vox recently that her family was “absolutely drowning in toys.” And while adults have been complaining about kids’ junk for generations (please see my father’s fruitless search for my brother’s one-inch-long toy wrench in Los Angeles International Airport circa 1992), many millennial and Gen X parents have the sense that something is different now — that kids have more toys than in past decades, and that they seem to arrive in ways Randall describes as “unintentional.”
Historical data on the average number of toys per kid is surprisingly hard to come by, but there is evidence that Americans’ toy glut is increasing — and it’s not just a problem for affluent households.
The least thoughtful holiday present you should definitely give
Everyone wants cash, despite its tacky reputation.
Despite the fact that giving cash as a present is not only normative but preferred in other countries like Korea and Japan, in the US and other Western cultures, the exchange is sometimes seen as gauche. Cash is easy, quick, and, most of all, practical since almost everyone could use a little more of it. But for those same reasons, money can be seen as thoughtless, or worse, an implication the gift recipient really, really needs it — more than the candle warmer or the novelty socks you picked out in a panic on Christmas Eve. After all, who wants to put a dollar amount on a priceless relationship?
45 Christmas Nail Ideas That Will Sleigh the Holiday Season
Whether you’re a mani minimalist or love a super-festive nail art moment.
Some people celebrate the holidays by throwing on a pair of flannnel pajamas and watching a Christmas movie or two. I, however, go balls to the walls. We’re talkin’ a full-size Christmas tree in my tiny studio, nonstop Christmas music on vinyl, covering my entire apartment in lights—ya know, the whole nine yards. There is one thing both holiday minimalists (sry, can’t relate) and full-on Christmas enthusiasts can agree on, though: Sporting a set of Christmas nails is the easiest and ~chicest~ way to feel festive during the holiday season.
The diamond necklace linked to the scandal that ruined Marie Antoinette’s reputation sells in a glittering auction in Geneva
The 18th-century jewels were sold as part of a historic auction at Sotheby’s
Sotheby’s in Geneva was sparkling last week as the historic sale of Royal & Noble jewels took place. Swiss society and the jewellery world was abuzz with excitement as an unidentified buyer over the phone fought over the jaw-dropping 300-carat necklace which is linked to Marie-Antoinette’s downfall in the lead-up to the French Revolution.
It was one of many pieces selling at the auction, including almost one hundred pieces from Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria’s dazzling personal collection of treasures by Fabergé, Eugène Fontenay and Castellani. Other pieces sold included many of the tiaras, bracelets and necklaces which belonged to his daughters, society swans Princess Eudoxia and Nadezha of Bulgaria.
“Have I Done Something Bad?”: Javier Bardem, by Richard Gadd
What is a nice guy like Javier Bardem doing being so bad? The Spanish actor has played plenty of softies—poets, painters, freedom fighters, and hopeless seducers—in his three-decade international career. But it’s his ability to crawl into the skin of a psychopath that springs to mind when thinking of his most iconic roles, particularly the terrifyingly calm, serial-killing hitman in the 2007 Coen Brothers neo-Western No Country for Old Men, which won him an Oscar, or his disfigured Bond supervillain in Skyfall. Now, Bardem, who’s had a big year with Dune: Part 2 and the animated movie Spellbound, can add a third feather to his maniac cap with last fall’s release of Netflix’s true-crime drama Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story, in which he played the brutal, abusive, and ill-fated L.A. music-exec patriarch José Menendez. It can’t be easy to sit with such villains for the duration of a project, but off-camera, Bardem may be one of the kindest and most down-to-earth guys imaginable. Just ask Baby Reindeer creator and star Richard Gadd, who called him to talk about staying grounded amid the chaos.
