We almost feel a little bad subjecting Laura Dern to an IN or OUT vote because her choice of dress for the LACMA Art + Film Gala embodies a lot of things you kittens tend to hate. On the other hand, it’s probably one of the most discussable looks of the night and that’s rarely something you can say about a Laura Dern style choice, so let’s do this:
Look, the skirt is lined. That’s gotta count for something. Like her one-time co-star Nicole Kidman (and a whole bunch of other pale blondes), black really pops on her. And as much as we tend to dislike widow’s weeds dresses, the style actually looks pretty good on her. But man, do we ever hate the design of that bodice. And we tend to think, as uncharacteristic as it might be for her, a little goth in the styling (even if it’s just a black mani and a dark lip) might have done a lot to pull this together for her. Despite all that, we don’t hate this as much as we might (or probably should), because there’s a lot about it that suits her and we sure can’t call it bland. What’s your take?
