Cher was finally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and apparent super-fans Zendaya and Dua Lipa came to the ceremony to pay tribute in both song and style. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were multiple costume changes.
This is pretty much perfect latter-day Cher. She doesn’t do the body-baring stuff of her youth, so she’s adopted more of a rocker chick style in her senior years, which suits her particularly well for this event.
This would be fantastic without the chaps. We get why she might not want to sport a leather mini and fishnets at this stage in her life, but the chaps don’t strike us as a workable, let alone fabulous solution.
Sure, maybe the wig tips it over from homage to straight-up cosplay, but if a gal can’t wear a vintage Bob Mackie gown to induct Cher into the Hall of Fame, then what are vintage Bob Mackie gowns even for? We’ve made this observation before, but Cher turned out to be one of the most influential style icons of the 20th Century. All of those sheer gowns we see today can draw a direct line to the ones she sported 50 years ago on television.
This is Prada trying to do a Bob Mackie homage and we feel like the brand should just stick to its lane. This isn’t terrible by any means, but it looks like a poor pastiche of what Zendaya had on.
This, on the other hand, is a perfect Cher homage because it looks like something she’d wear right now, albeit with a leather jacket over it. She looks great in it, maybe because it doesn’t feel like cosplay.
