We gave Eddie Redmayne his own spotlight post, but he wasn’t the only guy at the Academy Museum Gala who pushed the envelope on formal menswear. Granted, most of the male attendees opted for basic, conservative tuxes, but some were more adventurous and others were a little too casual. Let’s assess!

This looks to be a very fine suit, but it needs to fit him better. Those pants puddles make us sad.

Our first impulse was to suggest that this is too big on him, but he prefers his suits large and, except for the shoulders, all of it is fitted pretty well. It’s amazing how well he can pull off that mustache. We really hope it doesn’t become a trend, because 99% of guys are going to look sleazy as hell trying to pull that off.

Okay, time for a little bit of blasphemy. We feel like his style has gotten a little bit… we don’t want to say “over the top,” because that implies that he should be maintaining some sort of respectability. We’ll just say “overstyled.” The fringed sash, sheer gloves, campy minaudiere and bows are just… too much all at once. It just needs a little editing. We love the jacket, but we’d have suggested more conventional footwear, at the very least.

This looks okay, but that shirt and tie matching, but contrasting with the suit, feels very circa 2002 to us. The trend now tends to be monochromatic. He needs to stop posing like he’s in a department store catalogue.

Dan Levy in Tiger of Sweden

This looks great, but the pants are clearly too long.

Danny Ramirez in Fendi

It’s rare to see an all-white tux. We can’t say we love it, to be honest.

Drew Starkey in Loewe

Once again, we feel we must state for the record that we actually like the roomy suit trend, but some of the iterations are simply suits that are too large for their wearer instead of well-fitted suits with a looser silhouette. In other words, those sleeves fill us with rage.

Spectacular – and very hot.

Edgar Ramirez

Acceptable.

Harris Dickinson in Daniel W. Fletcher

A little gimmicky for our tastes. He’s a pale boy who should stay away from wearing too much white. It makes him look sallow.

Ismael Cruz Cordova

Why are all of these guys posing like this? Button your jackets and get your hands out of your pockets. This is actually really great. The fit is correct, he’s wearing a belt, and the shoes aren’t giving him doll feet. Not loving the tie, though.

Jaden Smith in Louis Vuitton

Love this pretentious little fop. This is gorgeous.

Jeff Goldblum

As classic as a classic get. Also, not unrelated, a man who knows how to pose.

Joshua Jackson

This is a hard rule: formal menswear requires socks. Another one: formal menswear does not include skinny pants. That’s fine with a suit or sportscoat, but a dinner jacket asks for a fuller pant and a tie.

Ke Huy Quan in Zegna

Never gets it wrong.

Lamorne Morris in Canali

The shirt could be buttoned more, if only because it’s collapsing, but this is all fine.

Macaulay Culkin in Zegna
Pin

He looks great when he gets all spiffied up.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez
Pin

Meh. A little too casual.

Nicholas Hoult in Prada
Pin

Fine — in every sense of the word.

Patrick Schwarzenegger in Versace

While we maintain that a tux requires a tie, certain guys can get away with this look. We’re surprised that he’s one of them, but he’s really pulling it off.

Paul Mescal in Gucci

The suit’s fine. Hate the non-shirt.

Regé-Jean Page in Dunhill

We would not have recommended a shirt with a satin finish. None of the blacks match because they’re all rendered in a different textile.

Ricky Martin
Pin

He looks super-hot, but those puddling pants legs make us sad.

Sacha Baron Cohen
Pin

Hate the turtleneck, but not as much as we hate the next one.

Sebastian Stan in Loro Piana
Pin

He always looks fine, but that turtleneck is overwhelming him and we don’t think it looks great with that suit.

Sterling K. Brown in Brioni
Pin

No complaints.

Winston Duke in Etro
Pin

Flawless. We wish that the shoes had more of a silhouette to them, but we’ll shut up about it.
