Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, who play sort-of doppelgangers in the super-buzzy film The Substance, are clearly not going to be dressing alike to highlight that fact during the promotion of the film, as evidenced by the very different looks they sported at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It’s always a bit of a shock going from the grand theatricality of the Venice Film Festival red carpet to the much more cramped and cozy version for TIFF. Both of these looks are kind of interesting. We’ve been seeing variations on the necktie on several mature ladystars in the last month. It’s a cute little microtrend, in our opinion. The pantsuit and the ladytux were in need of a fresh spin. Having said that, Demi looks a little too cater-waitress here. The cummerbund is making the whole bottom half look like an apron. It looks like she’s wearing an actual men’s shirt instead of a shirt tailored to her, so the boobs look like a shelf and there’s a lot of pulling. We like the idea of this outfit, but the details needed another pass before she walked out the door. Margaret has always had a goofy style and this is just more of the same. But we enjoy the drama of it, even if we think the shorts look terrible from a proportional perspective. We’d rather see the poncho worn with a pair of pants and no shirt. All of the bows need to be burned.
