Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce had themselves a weekend of PDAs and pap shots. Of course they were dressed and styled to the nines, in head-to-toe labels. We would expect no less from the gal we once called the Queen of the Sidewalk Sashay. Taylor isn’t, in our opinion, the chicest of celebrities, but she very much doesn’t want or need to be. For a long time, she’s been using her public fashion very strategically; constantly to promote an image of herself to her fans. Sometimes it’s a relatable image, sometimes it’s an uber-glam one. Right now, it’s pure “lead in a rom com.” Like no other boyfriend she’s ever had, Travis has picked up on all of that and is gleefully participating.

It’s not exactly revelatory to note when really famous people clearly love being in the spotlight, but boy, does this guy love the attention. It’s kind of charming how he can’t keep it off his face. His grooming is great, although the stache is a little thin. We’re not really here to rate the outfits, since neither of these appearances are “official” career-related work, i.e., they’re not promoting anything. Sure, anyone could argue that fame at this level means you never have an expectation that you’re off the clock any time you step out of your home. They are never photographed without the full expectation of being photographed. And he has picked up on her methods of dressing very purposefully; to either send little messages to obsessive fans or to play a certain role. We’re not going to get into the semiotics of it all because that’s just going to open us up to a tidal wave of fan anger, but the very traditional, borderline throwback sort of gender displays are interesting to note. It’s all very “He’s an X, she’s a Y” Young Adult romance-coded. She’s always been the girliest of girls and he’s – let’s face it – the most traditionally old-school masculine guy she’s ever dated. They’re playing up the reality of the situation a little in their clothing. It’s “cheerleader and quarterback” almost literally, except they’re both nearly two decades past high school and rich.

People will likely take this as a criticism, but it’s absolute not: it’s all very costume-y. They’re playing public roles. They know everyone’s looking at them and they don’t see the point in pretending otherwise. If you listen to our last podcast, you’ll hear that we’re not at all in agreement on the sincerity of their public displays, but we agree that they’re both enjoying themselves tremendously at the moment and they’re keeping the fashion fun.
