Sullen, sloppy movie star, rock star and director Johnny Depp is making his way back. And by that we mean “back to dressing like Pugsly Addams on a bender.” He’s at the San Sebastian Film Festival to premiere his directorial effort about the life of Modigliani, the extravagantly titled Modi, Three Days On The Wings of Madness. He’s not quite back to the elderly gay windchime looks of a decade ago, but the Deppiness is creeping back in.

As you can see, he’s tentatively back to hanging gewgaws off himself for no apparent reason. So far, he doesn’t give the impression that he makes a lot of noise when he moves about, so this is a slight improvement. We are going to go out on a limb and suggest that not only has he not recently been painting or working on a car, but that neither his ripped jeans or his boots have ever been worn to do such things. The jacket’s kind of nice. We’re sorry gentlemen, but it is impossible to wear this hat and not look douchey.

We tend to think his various accoutrement – hat, shades, chains, gewgaws, scarves, bandannas, random strips of fabric and pieces of metal – are all a form of security blanket for him. To be fair, we think they all reflect his true style preferences, but we also think he wraps himself up in all of this stuff in order to avoid being fully perceived. There’s a point at which accessorizing becomes a camouflage technique. Having said that, he’s clearly trying not to overdo it. We don’t mind this look. There’s clear effort and a point of view here. But we do think, like most of his style choices, it’s all a bit unflattering and random.
