So Madonna showed up at the Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan dressed like the Dowager Queen of Italy, which generated an enormous amount of attention for both her and the brand. She then showed up at the after-party dressed like this:

We’ll say this: there was a time, much earlier in our blogging career, when we would have been downright nasty about this and we would have told ourselves we were doing good by puncturing the self-importance of celebrities and fashion designers or whatever by trading in some rhetoric that skirted the lines of ageism and sexism. Having said that, D&G are still pretty awful people and this outfit is still a freaking disaster. More importantly, it would be a disaster on anyone. Sure, everyone got the attention they wanted. We don’t mind the idea of an aging pop star dressing outrageously. No one ever yells at her male contemporaries to dress more like grandpas. We don’t even mind the ongoing addiction to lace and undergarments, since it’s a fashion mainstay that she almost single-handedly invented. In other words, we’d have no problem with Madonna working some variation on Italian Bride/Italian Widow until she’s in the grave. But Jesus Christ, woman, try and be a little chic about it.
