Possible soon-to-be legendary disaster Megalopolis held a big, splashy “Imax Event,” which we presume to mean a screening and which its ladystars clearly took to be a premiere, judging by their outfits for the evening.

She has such a wryly dark and self-aware sense of humor, not to mention an appreciation of the absurd, that we can’t help seeing this as something of a joke on her part. It’s like she came dressed as a high-fashion version of her Janet Snakehole alter ego from Parks & Recreation. At least we hope that’s the case, because there’s no way in hell we can take this getup seriously.

This, on the other hand, is elegant. A little tight and low in the bust, but the color is lovely on her. We like the buttons, but we’d like them more in gold or black, we think.

Either she’s in on the joke the way Aubrey seems to be or she’s playing up the decadent fading empire themes of the film. Either way, it made us laugh. If that skirt design had been just slightly more resolved and intentional, this dress could work, but as it is, it’s just silly and messy.

Hmm. On the one hand, we find designs like these to be a little gimmicky and unsubtle. On the other hand, a cocktail dress made out of metal washers is a description that conjures up images far worse than this. The lining absolutely should have been black, however. We get that the shoes have a sort of armored shape to them, but we think they pull focus way too much.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
MEGALOPOLIS is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.
