16 ways that you can help stop violence against women and girls
Gender-based violence is not inevitable.
Be honest: when you read the words “violence against women and girls” online, do you keep scrolling? No one would blame you for feeling desensitised. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) has long dominated our social media feeds, whether it’s news reports of yet another domestic homicide, our peers panicking after another woman is murdered in the street, or activists and charities lobbying the government for urgent change. To engage with such a steady stream of bad news is to stare down the barrel of a terrifying truth: we are not safe.

Kate Middleton and a Scruffy Prince William Enlist an Unexpected New Spokesperson
Snoop Dogg had a celebratory message for the Paris 2024 Olympians on behalf of “the Prince and his lovely wife.”
Kate Middleton and Prince William weren’t in the stands for any of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, but on Sunday they sent out a message proving that they were following along at home. During the Paris closing ceremonies, the Prince and Princess of Wales tweeted out a video that showed a clip of them congratulating the athletes of Team Great Britain alongside video messages from celebrities including Snoop Dogg and David Beckham. Filmed in their Norfolk yard, their cameo featured William with a very uncharacteristic beard, while Kate wore a familiar Breton striped shirt.
What I Learnt About The Power Of Solidarity After Attending The Anti-Fascist Protests In My Hometown
When Patsy Stevenson heard a counter protest against far-right violence was due to take palce in her hometown of Southend-on-Sea, she knew she had to take part. Here, she opens up about what she’s learnt about the importance of a collective.
Counter-protests serve as a powerful reminder that there is strength in numbers. When people unite to stand against hate and discrimination, they send a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. This kind of unity has the potential to create real change by challenging the narratives perpetuated by far-right groups and fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society. It shows that when individuals come together, they can collectively resist the forces of division and bigotry.
I Am Extremely Here For Lindsay Lohan’s New Era
I have a confession to make: I have always been a Lindsay Lohan stan. Like, the kind of fan that – at one point – even made her my computer screensaver. I was a teen during the 2000s, okay? Lohan was practically running Hollywood then, thanks to her starring roles in iconic films like The Parent Trap, Mean Girls and Freaky Friday. I couldn’t be happier, then, that the star is having a renaissance of sorts this year. With a Freaky Friday sequel hitting cinemas next year – called Freakier Friday – Lohan will be joining forces with co-star Jamie Lee Curtis once again, and in anticipation of the film, the star has been doing some early press. In my opinion, she’s never looked better.
Boho Hair Is Back – I Gave It A Spin With 24” Extensions
“Having long hair is like having long nails, it’s a luxury because it takes a lot of maintenance to keep up,” says celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons, who recently released an Ariana Grande-length ponytail extension with Bellami. “Back in the day, the only way to get length was to take the time to grow your hair out, and for a lot of people, there’s a certain length that either your hair stops growing or stops looking good. But now, extensions are the perfect option for someone who wants to have it for a night or a month.”
Steve Schwarzman Is Turning His Newport Mansion, Miramar, Into a Museum
The Blackstone CEO is planning a lasting legacy by opening the Gilded Age mansion to the public for tours after his and his wife’s deaths.
Since acquiring the property for $27 million in September 2021 in a deal brokered by Gustave White Sotheby’s agent David Huberman, the Schwarzmans have undertaken an ambitious three-year renovation with the goal of restoring Miramar to its original glory—complete with historically appropriate art and furnishings that will serve as an ideal example of Newport’s Gilded Age art and architecture for the public. The museum will be run by a private foundation with an endowment to cover its operation and upkeep.
Ian Wardropper, director of the Frick Collection in New York, is a friend of the Schwarzmans and says they have “really put together the finest collection of French fine and decorative arts of the 18th century that [he has] seen in decades.”

You Can Live Like a Royal at Princess Margaret’s Vacation Home
Royal living boasts a hefty price tag.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to vacation like the royal family, you may be able to by renting out Princess Margaret’s favorite vacation home—if you can afford the hefty price tag, that is. The British royal family’s Les Jolies Eaux, a villa on the southernmost tip of of the private Caribbean island of Mustique, is open to rent by the public. The property, which Oliver Messel designed just for Margaret, served as a tropical escape for Queen Elizabeth’s younger sister.
At the Royal Mansour Casablanca, a Historic Crossroads of the World Gets a New Lease of Life
Hear the word Casablanca, and the mind inevitably turns to images of the classic 1942 movie: Humphrey Bogart puffing on cigarettes under the glimmering lamps of the famous Rick’s Café; an impeccably dressed Ingrid Bergman wandering through the city’s bustling souks; a kiss shared in the smoky haze of a Moroccan evening. And even if that vision of Casablanca immortalized in the film is a fiction in every sense—it was, in fact, filmed on the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank, although that didn’t stop an enterprising local from opening a replica of Rick’s Café in the city back in 2004—it’s difficult to imagine the film hasn’t played some part in Morocco’s decades-long journey to becoming one of the world’s most glamorous tourist destinations. (For evidence of the latter, just take the endless roll-call of glittering five-star hotels in Marrakech, or the stylish house stays overseen by the expat community of Tangiers that draw in the world’s haute bohemians.)
A New Study Says Washing Produce Does Not Remove Pesticides — Here’s What to Do Instead
You may want to dig your peeler out of the back drawer.
In April, Consumer Reports released its data showing an “alarming” amount of pesticide residue on fruits and vegetables sold in American grocery stores. Those hazardous pesticides include organophosphates, which have been shown to have “neurodevelopmental effects,” and carbamate insecticides, which also have “toxic effects such as interfering with the reproductive systems and fetal development.” While this report was distressing on its own, a new study is showing that washing your produce does not remove all the pesticide residues found on food.
What Makes Hatch Chiles So Special?
These symbols of New Mexican cuisine aren’t your average chile peppers. Here’s how to buy and use Hatch chiles while the season is in full swing.
Due to some unfortunate road trip planning last year, my husband and I arrived in Las Cruces, New Mexico the day after Labor Day, or — more importantly — the day after the annual Hatch Chile Festival ended. Each year, 30,000 visitors descend on the nearby farming town of Hatch to celebrate the harvest (and en masse roasting) of the long green chiles named for this fertile valley. Fortunately for us, the region’s chile harvest was just getting started, so we drove to the nearest grocery store in Las Cruces, where, sure enough, staff were roasting fresh chiles onsite.

Cate Blanchett’s 10 Best Performances: ‘Tár,’ ‘Carol,’ and More
Few actors in the industry today combine Blanchett’s ability to be both a titan onscreen and rawly intimate.
For many, the role of Lydia Tár would be a once in a career showcase. What’s impressive about Blanchett’s trajectory is how she’s managed to find so many projects over the years to showcase her once-in-a-generation talents. From dramedies like “Blue Jasmine” to biopics like “The Aviator” to action films like “Ocean’s Eight,” Blanchett shines onscreen, and her taste in projects and collaborators is incredibly strong. Her upcoming films include Guy Maddin’s black comedy “Rumors” set for U.S. theaters this fall, Steven Soderbergh’s 2025 spy film “Black Bag,” and Jim Jarmusch’s anthology “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother.” This fall will also see her make a rare TV appearance, playing a journalist grappling with a book about her life in Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ psychological thriller “Disclaimer.”
With Blanchett currently in theaters for one of her less distinguished films, now’s the time to remember what makes her such a vital actress. Read on for our selections of Blanchett’s best film performances, ranked.
Meet the Hiltons: A who’s who of one of the most famous dynasties in America
On 12 August 2014, two of the world’s most glamorous families came together when James Rothschilds proposed to Nicky Hilton
Theirs was a union which would bring together two of the most storied, glamorous and wealthy families in history; so it’s little surprise that James Rothschild chose to propose to Nicky Hilton in a somewhat spectacular manner.
Having dated for 3 years, on 12 August 2014, the billionaire Rothschild heir asked the youngest Hilton daughter for her hand during a romantic boat ride in Lake Como, Italy, popping the question with a 6-carat Asscher-cut diamond ring worth an estimated $2.5 million.
New Construction Blocking the View? ‘If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them.’
Neighbors on Fire Island took a clever approach to a common problem: They hired the same architects at the same time. Now everyone has a view.
What do you do when the neighbors’ construction threatens your view?
That’s the situation Katie and Sam Benrubi found themselves in when the owners of the small beachfront house in front of them on Fire Island began working on plans to knock it down and build a taller structure in its place.
The Benrubis’ house in Ocean Bay Park, N.Y., sat on a gentle rise and had a beautiful ocean view over the top of Nick and Andrea Papapetros’s home.
Why Can’t Anyone in My Family Manage to Change the Dang Toilet Paper Roll?
Why can’t my family seem to manage the simple task of replacing the toilet paper roll after they’ve finished one? Sometimes they’ll just leave the empty roll dangling there with no replacement, which is extremely lazy and inconsiderate. If I’m really lucky, they’ll at least perch a new roll on top of the empty one.
Pamela Anderson: ‘Being vulnerable is more exciting than rock and roll’
Sitting down with the global beauty icon during Copenhagen Fashion Week, Pamela Anderson talks feeling exposed after going make-up free and embracing vulnerability
You’ve recently become known as an icon for minimalist make-up. What has been your most interesting experience since going make-up-free?
Pamela Anderson: Well, I mean, at Paris Fashion Week, I just said ‘I can’t sit in a make-up chair for three hours. I’m going to the Louvre. I’ve got things to do. I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room. I’m not trying to compete with anybody. I just want to go see the show and see beautiful clothes.’ I kind of felt like this little girl from my hometown in Canada just plopped in Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. I thought, how lucky am I? I felt like I’m looking at it from a new perspective instead of an entitled perspective. I didn’t expect anyone to even notice.
