Darlings, you just knew we weren’t completely done with our Met Gala coverage, didn’t you? As if we could keep our mouths shut about the career, legacy, and problematic undertones of this year’s Met Gala honoree, Karl Lagerfeld. We deliberately kept our thoughts about him out of our red carpet coverage specifically so we could unpack his complicated history and his impact on fashion. We’ll tell you why he probably didn’t deserve a Costume Institute retrospective (and offer our picks for who should be getting one) and unpack why he’s so beloved in the world of fashion even as the world outside of fashion tended to find him a little gross.
