Fine, Barbie. You got us. You knew two excitable queens such as we would absolutely do two Barbie movie posts in one day if you doled out your revelations slowly, you devious little doll. After getting us to flap our hands and shriek over the utterly ridiculous character posters this morning, Warner Brothers released the second teaser trailer for director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie and while it doesn’t necessarily give much away about the plot, it does give you a better sense of how the director of Lady Bird and Little Women is approaching the material.
Hilariously, it would seem.
Much like the original teaser trailer’s loving homage to the OG Barbie, the shot of her perpetually arched feet or the design of that hilariously disproportionate car with its tiny windshield and steering wheel indicates an approach that’s very aware of the iconography of Barbie and is willing to have fun with it without necessarily ridiculing the character. If anything, we get the impression that all of the doll characters exist in a reality wholly created in the mind of a 5-year-old girl, from not knowing why couples spend the night together to literally all of her friends being Barbies or Kens. It’s a sly, funny take on what it would really be like to be Barbie. And yes, if you’re doing it right, there should be a lot of car crashes.
