We suppose there are some Sex and the City fans who are excited about a Carrie-and-Aidan reunion, but once again, we find ourselves thinking that the people behind this show (including star and EP Sarah Jessica Parker) misunderstand the appeal and the point of Sex and the City. The original show was far less about finding your one true love (at least in its earlier seasons) and far more about depicting how the single-minded pursuit of that goal can be humiliating and disappointing. The point to the original Carrie-and-Aidan storyline was that two people can be very much in love with each other but still be fatally wrong for each other and that can be an extremely painful realization for both of them. It was one of the most grownup storylines on all of SATC and now they’re just going to undo it with “TRUE LOVE PREVAILS IN THE END” or some such thing. Granted, there’s always the possibility that this storyline will go another way, but then we’re right back to “Carrie keeps making the same mistakes in her fifties that she made in her thirties,” which is such a dreary way of looking at middle age. Also: Corbett keeps sporting unlit cigarettes in all of these on-location shots, which would be quite the character turn for Aidan, since he made Carrie give up smoking to be with him. We tend to think the production is fucking with the fans on this one and he’s probably not a smoker in the storyline. Anyway, Carrie’s outfit is cute.
