We interrupt all of this Critics Choice Awards coverage for a reminder that the business of red carpetry continues in other parts of the globe. For the near future, we think we’re probably going to lean forward in our seats a little every time Margot Robbie explores a brand other than Chanel, to which she was bound for far too long. For the Sydney Babylon premiere, she worked a classic Versace design with a modern addition that doesn’t particularly help matters.
This is a version of a Versace gown worn by Carla Bruni in 1995, with the addition of red lace at the slit and the hem. Oh, sorry. We forgot to add the words “HORRIBLY ill-advised” between “the” and “addition” in the previous sentence. We think any shade of lace would be a bad idea here, but red would have to be among the worst color choices for this addition. It’s way more tightly fitted than Bruni’s version, which was more of a slip dress in design. We don’t know what’s going on under the bust to make it so bumpy, but it’s clearly too snug on her. It’s kind of a shame, because this could’ve been a knockout of a look for her.
