Janelle Monae has a tendency to be very theatrical about her style. While she’s fairly consistent (some might even say rigid) in how she restricts herself to mostly black-and-white ensembles, she finds ways to interpret or portray a variety of personae through fashion. For the National Board of Review Awards, she evidently opted to be Formal Tinker Bell for the night.
The dress design is a little odd and awkward to us. Our first impulse is to suggest that, to the extent that any of this is working, you can probably attribute it to Miss Janelle herself. Even so, while we might quibble with the side cutouts or the overwhelming volume of the sleeves, we tend to think the styling here is probably the bigger problem. It’s an interesting gown despite the parts of its design that aren’t working for us. As much as we love the Tinker Bell hair, we don’t think it works all that well with the design. Putting aside the Disney reference, it’s a retro-twee hairstyle for a dress that’s all dark glamour and sex appeal. The clean makeup seems a little off to us as well.
