We’re thrilled that the female cast members of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have been hitting the promo trail as hard as they have this past week or so, serving looks the whole way. But if we look over the recent style choices of Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Michaela Coel, and now Angela Bassett, it seems to us that they’re all trying to have these statement-making moments, but sometimes the result is some tricky or over-designed fashion. Lupita made some stumbles over the weekend and Danai managed to make her tricky retro looks work for her, but there have definitely been some risks taken throughout this tour, by most of the cast. Which brings us to Miss Angela’s latest, for the Smithsonian screening:
It’s by no means a disaster. In fact, she looks pretty great here. Granted, it would be hard for her to look anything but great, but our point is not that she took some major risk so much as she once again chose a tricky, slightly overdesigned frock that we don’t think she needs in order to make an impact. The bodice is interesting, but we think with a dress like this, you can either have the askew bodice or the askew skirt, but when you put them together, it’s just too much askew. In other words, with a simpler lower half, that bodice has some appeal to it. We don’t like the shape or design of the skirt at all. The jewelry’s fantastic and her hair and makeup are their usual spectacular.
