We feel like we absolutely must rave about Kate Hudson’s Oscar de la Renta gown here, or else we’d have to admit that we’re being hypocritical. Okay, fine. After a decade of saying how bored we are by unlined sheer gowns on the red carpet, it behooves us to recognize when someone shows up in a fully lined version of one.
But we have to also admit that aside from that one welcome detail, the gown itself is kind of just okay. Don’t get us wrong, we don’t think it would be improved if the lining was ripped out. We do think several layers of sheer black lining would work better than a “nude” one, though. That aside, the issue with this look is less about the dress (which is, as we noted, okay) than it is with the styling. First, a neckline like that begs for a choker or pendant. Second, the wet hair look is honestly kind of awful here. Looking at the relatively light amount of makeup and the design of the dress, we think the style team was going for a soaking wet look, as if she climbed out of a pool in a gown. That might have worked in an editorial, but it only looks like she got caught in a downpour on a red carpet.
