Patti LuPone picked up her third Tony Award last night, for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Joanne in Company. She also neatly answered that age-old question, What becomes a legend most?

If that dress doesn’t practically scream “GRANDE DAME OF THE THEATER,” then no such dress exists. It’s dramatic and grandiose and it suits her perfectly. It’s incredibly well-fitted for so much velvet and we find ourselves wondering just how high the AC had to be cranked up so she didn’t collapse. We don’t mind jewelry worn over gloves (it’s got a nicely retro 19th century feel to it when it’s done right), but we’re not sure the combination of heavy diamonds and black velvet gloves work all that well together. She’d have been better off with a necklace. Or even better, a tiara, if she really wanted to lean into the grande dame mode. Kudos to her for finding a spot to place that ACLU ribbon, but it kind of looks like it got caught on her sleeve.
