Seeing Elle Fanning posing outrageously in high fashion looks on Cannes red carpets is yet another of those yearly latter-day traditions we’d forgotten that we missed. It’s been so long, Elle. Pose ridiculously in your retro frocks forever, please.

It’s not the most exciting design in the world and even as retro looks go, it’s pretty generic. But it’s a L’Oreal dinner, the dress suits her easily and it’s styled well. The hairbow may be a bit much, but the jewelry is gorgeous.

She’s a Fanning, which means she’s genetically predisposed to being drawn to clothes that match her skin. She and her sis will never stop loving those wash-me-out frocks. The design is pretty and has a little bit of old-school sex appeal in a Marilyn or Jayne Mansfield sort of way. It would have more impact in a more vivid pink, though. And we’re still not loving the hair bow.
