THE ESSEX SERPENT Starring Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes: Official Trailer and Images

Posted on April 26, 2022

Time’s a funny thing. Why, it seems like it was only yesterday that we were saying how it seemed notable that the trailer for Apple TV+’s limited series The Essex Serpent was nowhere to be found, even though screenings have already started and the show premieres in only a few weeks. Oh, wait. It was yesterday. Our harsh and judgmental words must have frightened everyone at Apple TV, because wouldn’t you know it? A trailer has suddenly appeared. It’s a good thing we only use our awesome powers for good.

What’s of most interest to us here is that despite our implication that this might be a stinker because of the previously non-existent trailer, it actually looks pretty great. We forgot how bad Apple is at promoting its stuff, despite having some of the best shows on television.

We question whether Claire Danes’ accent is on point, but we just love when actors with weird, oppositional energy are paired up like this. Keira Knightley was originally slated to play this part but had to pull out of the project and we can’t help thinking how much less interesting this might have been with her and Tom doing their usual bit opposite each other. Claire and Tom, on the other hand, are such a weird pairing. We’re really interested in seeing what they’re like when they play off each other. His sad cow eyes shtick coming up against her spectacular skill at ugly crying will be fun to watch.

THE ESSEX SERPENT follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms an unlikely bond with the village vicar (Tom Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature. Based on the novel by Sarah Perry.
