The Tragedy of MacBeth had its premiere last night (just in time for awards consideration) and Frances McDormand, the film’s Lady MacBeth herself, hit the red carpet in high Frances McDormand style. And by that we mean a $15,ooo coat, pajamas, and pink socks with sandals.

Granted, the pajamas are $5000 and the sandals are about a thousand, so it’s not like she was doing a high-low thing. It’s all high-masquerading-as-low. It’s how she tends to approach those moments in her career where she’s expected to dress formally. She’s won enough Oscars to know that you have to campaign for them on some level and she knows sporting over $20,000 worth of the latest luxury goods is the way most actresses tend to do it. So here she is, doing as expected in the most unexpected of ways. That’s her in a nutshell. Do we like this ensemble? No. Do we appreciate how she tends to treat high fashion? Also no. We’d appreciate this look way more if the pajamas were from Walmart and the sandals were Birkenstocks, to be honest. But we do respect that she’s true to herself and that, in her own way, she’s playing the game while mocking it.

The coat’s a stunner, by the way. It’s a bit hard to tell.
