In fashion, as in life, those who take risks are always forced to contend with the same question when said risks fail to elicit the desired response: Was it worth it? But that is not the question here today. If you’re at a Gucci-hosted event in Gucci, surrounded by everyone else wearing Gucci, there’s no risk involved. But Tracee Ellis Ross has more or less defined her style by “Lighten up and have fun with it” approach, which has served her well – most of the time. The question that springs to mind when taking in this rather goofy ensemble isn’t “Was it worth it?”

The question here: “Is it possible to have too much fun with fashion?”

Not that we’d ever suggest she should tamp down on her draggy, sometimes clowny style predilections. For the most part, they really are fun. But sometimes we think her love of quirk leads her down some questionable style roads. We don’t care what Gucci says, there’s no way that coat works with that suit. They’re both fabulous, but the pairing of them diminishes them. That coat needs some killer jeans and stiletto boots. That suit needs to be left alone to shine and a good hemming to get rid of those awful cuffed bottoms. It also needs more interesting shoes and (we don’t expect a lot of agreement on this one), less matchy earrings. It’s like none of the various elements of this outfit are working to support or complement the others.
