Jodie Comer in Elie Saab at “The Last Duel” New York Premiere: IN or OUT?

We’re gonna rate this one a scrolldown surprise, but in a fairly subtle sort of way. It’s not that there’s a disaster waiting for you at the bottom of this outfit, but we did find a couple of things to be surprised about.

It’s all really kind of working for us up top. She does great with a squared-off shoulder and the Bulgari necklace is exquisite. But this is really more of a coat than a dress – which is fine, we guess. It’s gorgeous as a coat. But it does tend to look very heavy and slightly overwhelming in pictures. That sleeve length isn’t helping and we don’t think the hem length is great either. But the sheer hose and heavy ankle strap shoes were a bit of a surprise and we’re wrestling with whether they were a mistake or a stroke of brilliance. The heaviness of the shoes tends to balance out the visual weight of the dress and the stockings tend to give it a more finished, more deliberate feel, rather than making it look like she’s wearing a coat over nothing. On the other hand, we tend to think a design like this practically begs for a boot and the runway shot below tends to make that case better than our words could.
