Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Opening Gala: Regina King in Louis Vuitton

This is definitely one of those red carpet moments when the look seems to become way more than the sum of its parts, even when a few of the parts are problematic or not to our tastes. Regina King has such a spectacular red carpet record and a styling team that is so perfect for her tastes and her strengths that sometimes, a look comes off better just because she’s wearing it.

We almost feel bad subjecting this to scrutiny because it’s got great first-impression impact, but it starts looking dicey when you take in the details. We don’t always love the blend of activewear with formalwear. We think the track pants stripes work well with the blue but not all that great with the shininess of the suit textile. The fit on the jacket is a right mess, we’re sorry to say. It looks like it was pinned, but badly and at the last second. We like the shoes, but we’re not convinced they work with the suit. The one thing that pretty much saves it (aside from her natural abilities at working it) is that her hair, makeup and jewelry are all spectacular. The suit’s got possibilities, but like all suits, it needs to start with an impeccable fit.
