Cannes 2021: Jodie Turner-Smith in Gucci at the “After Yang” Photocall

Jodie Turner-Smith would cut a dramatic figure for any photo call no matter what she wore to it, which is why we’re always thrilled to see her go hard on the fashion, knowing that she doesn’t have to. She doesn’t rest on “striking,” in other words. Having said that, while we appreciate how eye-catching and photogenic this Gucci look is, we have a hard time getting past one glaring design choice, which you can probably surmise without even scrolling down.

Believe it or not, we think the football shoulders are an interesting design element. We could see them working with a much more darkly dramatic gown underneath them. But this ensemble’s pretty clearly day wear and it needed neither superhero shoulders nor any black elements added to it. We can see the attempt to pull it all together with the black sandals and the equally as focus-pulling bag, but we vehemently dislike the latter and we don’t think the former do much for the dress. Ditch all the black pieces and get her in a chic little pair of gold metallic sandals and call it a day. The dress is gorgeous and unique. It doesn’t need anything more than Jodie wearing it to look stunning.
