This is an unusual look taken on its own and something of an unexpected swerve when put up against the dramatic gownery of Regina King’s promotional and awards-season wardrobe for her directorial debut, One Night in Miami.

Not that there needs to be any reason or meaning behind it, but we wonder if the turn towards a kind of suit is because she’s appearing at the DGAs as a director for the first time. We also wonder if it’s really a coincidence that her hair resembles a beret, the sort of old-Hollywood cliche of a director’s outfit. The design itself is oddly captivating. The combination of high-waisted pants and a cropped off-the-shoulder jacket with cap sleeves over a sheer blouse just sounds ridiculous. But that textile is beautiful and keeping everything the same color provides a sense of unity to such a collection of disparate elements. It just works for us.
Did it need a belt maybe?
