You may have seen us mention the idea of the Oscar-adjacent star and what kind of opportunities they have to maximize their PR in the peripheral glow of the spotlight. We don’t mean that in a dismissive way at all. Quite a few Oscar-adjacent stars graduate to becoming Oscar nominees if not winners themselves. For the smart ones and the talented ones, it’s a real step up in your career and the opportunities that come your way when you have a part in a film that goes on to win quite a bit of acclaim. Laverne’s role in Promising Young Woman wasn’t very big, but it made an impact (partially because she was one of the few sympathetic characters) and was historic in its own way because no mention was made of her status as a trans woman. In a film that was largely about weaponized femininity and female rage, that’s a quiet but highly significant form of representational progress.

Anyway, girlfriend’s serving lewks here, as she should:

Love the hair, love the color play. It’s not the most original design in the world, but with the styling and her inarguable charisma and presence, she’s making it look like a million bucks.

BALMAIN

We started covering her the second she made a splash in Orange is the New Black and in the early days of her career, it was clear that she loved fashion, but wasn’t getting access to the high-end brands. It’s so fabulous to see her working a Balmain like she’s heading to brunch at Beyonce’s. Gorgeous colors; love the coordinating eye makeup.

We’re also THRILLED to see Lavie by CK becoming something of a go-to label for A-list Black women on the red carpet. We first highlighted the line, by Cameroon-designer Claude Kameni, earlier this year when we launched our Black-Owned Fashion series and it’s so great to see her profile rise higher and higher. And for good reason. Like most of her designs, this absolutely stunning.
