Thebe Magugu, a Johannesburg-based South African designer, won the LVMH Prize in 2019. This was not only great news for him, but incredibly helpful to us, because the LVMH prize site offered the best, most succinct introduction:

“Originally from the small town of Kimberley, he moved to Johannesburg to study fashion design, fashion photography and fashion media from LISOF. After winning best graduate collection, he interned and worked for a selection of designers fashion institutions and retailers. After 2 years, he began his namesake label, THEBE MAGUGU – a South African fashion brand primarily operating within the field of women’s ready to wear.

Speaking about the brand, the designer says, “together with our pillar values of quality, novelty and culture, we constantly seek new ways of presenting women with clothing that both complies with and enhances the everyday. Sleek, forward-looking design intersects with motifs from our continent’s storied past, providing smart, multifaceted clothes as valuable as their woman”.

In addition, the Thebe Magugu brand site articulates the driving forces and philosophy behind the clothes:

“Between pillar practices of cultural honour, novelty and uncompromising quality, we are establishing an identity marked by self-evolving timelessness. We constantly seek new ways of presenting women & men with clothing that embraces and enhances their everyday experience. Sleek, forward-looking design intersects with motifs & details that draw from our continent’s storied past, complex present and exciting imagined futures, providing smart, multifaceted clothes that mirror the inspiring qualities of the people they are made for.”

What could we possibly add to all of that? Except a whole lot of pictures, that is? Scroll through and be transported by the Thebe Magugu brand and aesthetic; bold, modern, textural, exquisitely tailored, and above all else, NEW.
