Darlings, once again the fashion gods have smiled upon us and bestowed a bounty of blessings. In other words, pandemic or not, we’re still in the middle of awards season, which means high-level looks are being served on the regular. That there are no red carpets – or indeed, anyone nearby to even see these ensembles close up – doesn’t matter. It’s the Critics Choice Awards, dammit. A short, but essential pitstop on the way to the Oscars and Emmys. You dress up and you pose wherever you’re standing. That’s how it’s done in 2021. And these two ladies did it fabulously this week.
Tom’s pick: Amanda Seyfried in Miu Miu
T’s Defense: It’s pretty much impossible to do anything to redefine the ladytux, since it’s been interpreted and re-interpreted countless times over the last forty or so years. Even so, this take feels fresh. You don’t really expect to see a potential Oscar nominee come out in something quite this sassy, but I love the swerve. It’s glamorous, witty, sexy and unexpected. And I love that she drew her own red carpet.
Lorenzo’s pick: Yara Shahidi in Dior Couture
Lo’s Defense: I can’t help but ADORE this look. It’s so high-fashion, which she’s so good at playing with. But it’s also really whimsical and even a bit strange, which is the kind of fashion she just excels at. The colors are interesting and unexpected, the juxtapositions of print and embellishment make it really eye-catching. And her hair is just flawlessly matched to it. She looks amazing and she looks completely unique. That’s hard to pull off – for anyone who’s not her.
