The inauguration festivities were both subdued and a little corny, but both of those aspects were deliberate. It’s going to be a corny four years, folks. That’s what you get when a guy who likes to use the word “malarkey” unironically becomes your President. And we bet it’ll pay off, because America could use a little more corniness and cheese and quite a bit less rioting and insurrection, wouldn’t you say?
Anyway, Miss Katy, who can sometimes be the Queen of Corny herself, closed out the night by setting off fireworks – literally.

We had that pegged as a Thom Browne design immediately, even though there are only a few of his favorite design motifs to be found here. It’s that almost Victorian sense of formalness crossed with a modern sense of whimsy. Perfect for her and the occasion. We didn’t actually love the ensemble on its own merits, though. All that white satin still looks bridal, no matter how many little colored buttons you put on it. We think we might have liked it more without the cape element, which takes it too far into Grande Dame territory and that’s not really Katy’s bag. But it was dramatic and memorable, rising to the occasion by treating it with some sense of grandeur and seriousness. We can’t hate. We just don’t love.
