Katy Perry Promotes “Smile” in Yasmin Julie Bergmann and Moschino

For years, we’ve been calling Miss Katy’s style “cartoon couture,” given her fondness for bold colors, outrageous silhouettes, and large-scale prints. And for years, her pal Jeremy Scott at Moschino has been helping her indulge that preference. Now she’s more or less stuck at home baby-baking while trying to promote a single entitled “Smile,” which means all the machinery was in place to get her to ramp up her cartoon couture to full-on clown couture. It seems inevitable, really.

To her credit, she’s not relying entirely on the Moschino aesthetic to give her that clowny realness. This is a highly impractical, mostly ridiculous look that nonetheless looks really cute and fun styled this way. We don’t like the shoes at all, though. There’s so much going on here that she really didn’t need the pop of color. We realize we’re critiquing a look with an actual clown nose involved.

This is honestly kind of adorable and we LOVE the sandals. It looks like this and the previous look utilized wigs, which is not at all surprising. Not only because clown couture kind of calls for it, but the current situation kind of calls for as much remote styling as you can get away with. Wigs may become more of a celebrity fashion trend going forward if you can just have your head of hair styled far away from you. Love the makeup here too. To be fair, we’d probably be a bit more critical of her face, dress and shoes all matching in a red carpet situation, but she’s having fun and it makes sense for what she’s promoting.  Having said that …

She kinda lost us a little on this one. Or maybe she just lost it, period – in which case, we can’t really blame her because aren’t we all kinda losing it at the moment? Can’t a locked-down lady doing the work of making a baby freak out a little now and then? We may not love the outfit (except for the booties, which are adorable), but we can’t say we don’t understand the impulse. Freak out, clowny girl. We get it.
