“Little Women” and “Black Widow” star Florence Pugh covers the June 2020 issue of British ELLE magazine photographed by Liz Collins and styled by Aurelia Donaldson.
On Pugh’s Black Widow character being described as “in peak athletic condition”: “Essentially you need to look good moving. For me, I loved all of that because I grew up with a lot of dance and a lot of movement. I was always fighting my brother [actor and musician Toby Sebastian], so I find all of that combat stuff so exciting. Once you’ve put it on camera you’ve got to know how to make it look right and that’s a whole different beast.”
On rumours that stars of Marvel films have to submit to gruelling workouts and exacting diets: “When I got the job [role of Yelena Belova in Black Widow], I wanted to know what the regime was. I wanted to know whether it was them or me calling the shots. That was a big deal for me. I didn’t want to be part of something where I was constantly checked on. And people making sure I was in the ‘right’ shape. That’s not me at all.”
On replying to trolls online making comments about who she’s dating: “I’ve always found this part of what people do really bizarre. I’m an actor because I like acting and I don’t mind people watching my stuff, but people have no right to educate me on my private life. I know that part of being in the spotlight is that people might invade your privacy and have opinions on it, but it’s bizarre that normal folk are allowed to display such hate and opinions on a part of my life that I’m not putting out there. It’s a strange side of fame that you’re allowed to be torn apart by thousands of people even though you didn’t put that piece of you out there.”
ELLE UK’s June 2020 issue is on newsstands from May 7, 2020.
