On being a “wreck”: “Oh my god, I’m a wreck,” she laughs, before recounting how she spent her morning trying, and mostly failing, to get super prepared for our interview. “I was like, Get your shit together and look like a decent human being,” she says. “Don’t be late. Pee before. Get your hair done.”

On her anxiety: “I came into this world with anxiety,” she says. “I used to hold my breath from anxiety when I was a baby and it would make me faint. There are times when it’s debilitating, and there are times when it makes me laugh, like in the car today when I lost the plot entirely. But I actually feel like my superpower is my anxiety. It’s one of my key motivators, and it’s at the center of my ambition.”

On her fear of a quarter life crisis: “I think I’m nearing it…or in it,” she says. “There’s nothing I can do. I just have to ride the wave. I fully have existential thoughts. What does it all mean? How are we here? What were we put on this earth to do? Then I’m like, ‘Zoey, just stop.’”

Woody Harrelson on Zoey Deutch: “You know, I’ve worked with a lot of great actresses even before they became really well-known,” her Double Tap costar Woody Harrelson tells me over the phone. “I knew with Brie Larson and with Emma Stone and with Jen Lawrence—I knew that these gals were going places. And I can tell you with the same surety that Zoey Deutch will be a force to be reckoned with. No question.”

Jessica Lange on Zoey Deutch: “She’s a genuine actress and I think that’s what matters to her,” Jessica says. “It’s not about becoming famous.”
