Ooooh, girl. We’re about to step into it. Give us a second to put on our helmets and flame-retardant suits.

We’re sorry, but these two are just wrong here.

When the widow of an international icon who’s considered one of the greatest South Africans of all time puts on a stunning dress to meet you, your “We’re just the casual, relatable royalty” schtick starts coming off seriously misguided. Meghan, who sure does love herself a colorless sleeveless trench dress, looks like a staff person coordinating a meeting of dignitaries rather than one of the actual dignitaries. And Harry’s open shirt is just not cute here.

At least he managed a tie to meet the President and First Lady.

Look, we’ll reiterate that we’re generally pretty supportive of most of the ways they’re trying to redefine their royal roles, including their insistence on downgrading the pomp and pageantry. But a royal’s entire job as a royal consists of image craft. Which means when you’ve got a day of meeting dignitaries and widows of legends planned, you dress with some deference to the expectations of your role. That dress is wrinkled, ill-fitted, and the opposite of photogenic, but more important: it’s simply too casual for these occasions.
