Toronto International Film Festival: Scarlett Johansson in Oscar de la Renta and Rodarte

Posted on September 10, 2019

Miss Scarlett served up some hot dress action, which is a good thing. She did not serve up the required hot-dress styling, which is a not-so-great thing.

That’s pretty much this post in a nutshell: fantastic dress, not-fantastic everything else. We must be coming around on the trend for mini-dresses with these big-ass flounces hanging off them, because this one actually looks kind of chic and pretty. Maybe it’s the somewhat muted color story that keeps it in the realm of the classy, because some of the dresses in this style have come off pretty tacky. But we don’t know if there’s a color-blindness issue here or if someone thought their tone-on-tone matching skills were up to the task, but the earrings and the shoes are so brightly colored that they almost clash with the dress. At the very least, they pull all the focus from it. From color to style, neither the shoes nor the earrings work here. And the severe hair’s kind of an odd choice too.

To be fair, we have less to complain about here. It’s a KILLER dress, the sandals and jewelry coordinate well and the look overall is one of her better ones of late. We still think the hair’s a little underplayed, but we suppose we should accept that she’s not the kind to sit still form some elaborate do or blowout. We don’t think it’s the best choice for her, but she clearly likes to keep her hair simple and downplayed. We know we should be saying that the two necklaces don’t work together, but honestly, we find the combination kind of appealing.
